Album Notes
The original Mommyheads were three very young men from Brooklyn in the late '80s. They were brilliant and ecstatic, completely instinctive in their musical reactions to each other. They played some of the most exciting shows of their time, child geniuses bending your brain and heart into pretzels. Singer/guitarist Adam Cohen was the de facto leader and primary songwriter. Bassist Matt Patrick also sang and wrote some of Acorn's great tracks. Drummer Jan Kotik was a uniquely expressive arranger, one of the most intrepid compositional percussionists of the day. Acorn was their first album, produced with Chris Rael and released on New York indie label Fang Records in '89. The Mommyheads went on to record many albums, criss-crossing America many times in the indie alternative music heyday. Acorn was their only complete album in this original configuration - Adam and Matt moved to California soon after, while Jan stayed in New York. Eventually Matt also went out on his own. The current Mommyheads configuration of Adam, drummer Dan Fisherman, pianist Michael Holt and bassist Jeff Palmer is now enjoying a resurgence in Europe, thus sparking new interest in Acorn. Of all the Mommyheads' albums, Acorn is revered as a cult classic, a beloved, hard-to-find gem of an album. Until now! Thanks to the net, Acorn is no longer hard to find. After all these years, this music is as daring and poignant as ever.
