ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I am thrilled to release my debut album 'But Beautfiul' and was inspired by the great ladies of Jazz: Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen MacRae, Nina Simone and Lena Horne, their life stories and brilliance, hence the title 'But Beautiful' came to mind from one of the songs I recorded on this album. This song really spoke to me and the songs that followed, carefully chosen and recorded with these beautiful and amazingly talented ladies in mind, who endured so much in their lives. I attempt to transmit their pain, love, joy, loss and heart break through my interpretations. Each song presents at least one of these emotions, if not all combined!

" Monica is inspired by such legends as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, NIna Simone, Carmen MacRae and Lena Horne but makes the music she sings very much her own. Her voice is distinct and unforgetteable."

Over the past year, she has been working with iconic music producer/pianist Bill King, who produced her debut jazz album 'But Beautiful', and has now been released on CD Baby and will be released on iTunes, Amazon, Archombolt, Spotify and other great music sites by mid June,2013. Bill put the finest renowned musicians in Canada on this album: Bill KIng (piano), Duncan Hopkins (bass), Mark Kelso (drums), William Sperandei (trumpet), Anne Lindsay (violin), Reg Schwager (guitar) and Luis Jorge Papiosco (percussion) and was recorded at Inception Sound Studios, Toronto, engineered by the amazing Michael Haas.

The Gold Standard Of Jazz Singers!
But Beautiful is a grand musical journey, each song selected and sequenced so perfectly, it reminds me of the chapters in a well-written book. Each scene is played eloquently by Monica's smooth and powerful vocals, the brilliant piano and vibrant trumpet, thoughtful guitar and bass, and rock-steady rhythm section. The inspired addition of a violin adds a poignant voice to an already masterful combo. But it is Monica's heartfelt vocal that shines here, caressing the emotions of these grand songs, drawing the listener into the stories, in total command of the stage inside our hearts. This is my second Monica Chapman CD, and I'm just as happy with But Beautiful as I was with PS I Love You! Monica, you keep making these great recordings, I'll keep listening-and buying.

Just a terrific album by an outstanding jazz stylist. For lovers of the "Canaries" and all who enjoy listening to a song truly "lived in" by the performer. Monica gets into character and her superb voice and excellent backing musicians do the rest. This is a MUST-HAVE album which calls for many repeat listenings ... 5 stars!!!

Best Jazz singer to come along in years...
Just as Monica Chapman is thrilled to have her debut album released, I am thrilled to be able to listen to such outstanding music. Monica is one in a million. Her voice and tempo are amazing, the stuff dreams are made of. She has the look and sound of the "greats" of all ages. Her stage presence is amazing. In my opinion, she's the best jazz singer of our new generation and will be revered throughout the years, right along with Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and the rest of the gifted entertainers. I wish you a long, happy career, Monica. Love this album, especially the title song and No Moon At all. Your rendition of one of my all-time favorites is "tops" too: C'est si Bon. Wow! - Betty Dravis
