Album Notes
File under Tiger rock: Ferocious yet beautiful.

Best new band in Boston is not a title given lightly to electronic rock innovators MOONRAKER. If a nod at the 2003 Boston Music Awards isn't enough to intrigue the listener, then check out Moonraker, their self-titled release on Immergent Recordings.

MOONRAKER met at school in Boston in 2000 and started experimenting with electronic music. As film students, David and Kody were immersed in off-beat cinema, which found its way into their long Friday night rehearsals. Their cohort Dan Mintzer soon found a passion for emulating the drum machine. With the addition of Daniel Chen and Kelli Scarr--by way of a street flyer --the band started playing gigs at TT the Bears and the Middle East. During the winter MOONRAKER won a Boston area contest that secured them enough money to record their debut LP Nada Brahma, which sold 5,000 copies independently.

Within the next two years, MOONRAKER was performing alongside Lake Trout, Elefant, Rainer Maria, Joan Osbourne, The Slip, DJ Spooky, and the Broken Social Scene, developing a faithful fan base across the border. The band won WBOS' Best New Band in Boston [in 2001] and received regular airplay on the Boston stations WERS and WBCN. Most recently, they were announced best new band at the 2003 BMAs.

The past year has brought big changes for the band's music, touring, and locale. They now reside in Brooklyn but are often touring across the country in the van; it shows in the music. Their new album serves as a document of a group constantly in flux. The self-titled Moonraker contains new recorded versions of songs from the LP Nada Brahma, tracks off the out-of-print Moonraker EP, and four new tracks ("Courageous World", "Salimander Skin", "Connected" and "Can I Love"). The album delivers a solid introduction to the eclectic sound of MOONRAKER. File Under: Björk, Portishead, early U2 and the Police.

From the band's inception, their creative purpose was, and still is, to let the music form itself. At an average age of twenty-two, they still have many creative frontiers to explore. They observe and contribute, but ultimately the music takes its course. They realize that music can be shaped but not controlled. Although the members of MOONRAKER are aware of music from the past, they do not let themselves be defined by it. Instead they look for new ways of crafting a song and performing it. Never stale for a moment, they are changing (even as you read this).

i think i heard this somewhere before...
Wow... when I first heard their song "Shalom" on 88.9 WERS I almost teared... You see, I heard an echo of Portishead in there, and I dunno about others, but I listen to them when I'm down, in a bad mood or sad.. so a tear in this case is very appropriate. I HAD to have Moonraker's CD! :)
After getting the CD I realized that this group has the most amazing combination of "No Doubt" and "Portishead" with just a touch of "Morecheeba". Anotherwords - TripHop!
If you're into any of those bands, get this CD, listen to it - you'll love it!

smooth and funky
This cd was referred to me by a friend, and i'm 100% glad i picked it up... the vocals are earthy and smooth, the trippy rhythm section stylings keep you on your toes, and the whole album gives you a sense of the world swirling around you... definitely recommended, five stars!!!

there isn't much i can say that hasn't already been said...moonraker is unreal, the beats, the lyrics, that voice, the guitar and drums and keyboards and my goodness that bass! it all ties in so beautifully together to create this auditory euphoria. 'these walls' is what hooked is sexy as hell. each song is absolutely lovely and the strength of jazziness creates those moments we never have enough of during the day...a time to just chill.

Expectations and surprises were all good!
The beginning was more rock inflenced than I expected, but it was still good. Then some of the end tracks are more drum'n'bass influenced than I expected, but that was also a pleasant surprise. GREAT vocals.

If you haven't heard of Moonraker before, then this is the album to start with. On the other hand, for fans this newest cd is like an old lover sneaking back into your life after a long extended break--your soul happily reminds you why you keep swimming in such addictive sensations...the cd contains tracks from their previous 2 albums w/ brand new mixes that are both new & true to their trademark sound--whether the song is dealing w/ themes of love or our modern ways; the music just moves your mind & soul. Sometimes you just want to dance to the music & sometimes you just want to nod your head in affirmation. Bottom line: Moonraker moves souls.

Cutting edge !
Their music is a hybrid of rock, electronica, trance and jazz. The five members of Moonraker come from diverse backgrounds, which gives their songs character, depth and variety. This ten-track collection is a cornucopia of sounds, moods, styles and visual imagery that is well produced. This music is cutting edge. I enjoyed the entire CD but the first two tracks 'Shalom' and 'Courageous World' were the gems with powerful lyrics, edgy rock tones and ambient instrumentation. Moonraker has star potential and they are on the rise!

This is the whole package! I hear funk, blues, jazz all wrapped up in awesome vocals. Sometimes it reminds me of Ani, sometimes Alana Davis, sometimes Morley, but always hip! I've been waiting for fresh music to come out where you can just throw it in and listen...instead of skipping over half the tracks! A++!

Happy, happy
This is a CD to listen to when you're in a good mood, whether you're chilling or full of energy! I like the fact that some of the tracks actually can make a great day even better. It's a CD you just can't dislike.

Still pondering over whether to get this?.....STOP IT....and just put it in your shopping cart...the tracks on here are soooooo LOVELY..this is a mood shifting's hard to stay in a funky mood if you got this playing...the music is so refreshing..and I am really feeling this girl's voice...wanted I really wanted to do was but all 3 of their CD's on here...but my change is strange, so I'll be back for the other 2(HAHAHAHAHHA) This CD has something for everybody...lil acid jazz, triphop, some ambient stuff going on..let me stop tryna describe it to ya LISTEN:GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC!!!
