Album Notes
THE MOREIRA PROJECT is led by 30 year old Moreira Chonguica who is an award-winning Cape Town based musician, songwriter, producer, record label director and saxophonist originally from Mozambique.

Moreira’s debut album, THE MOREIRA PROJECT Vol 1 – The Journey was released in December 2005 and has been received with overwhelming response from the industry as well as the media on both local and international levels. The album expresses not only his phenomenal song writing ability and energetic performances but also his major personal coup of securing the support and talent of international jazz legend – NAJEE on several tracks.

MOREIRA CHONGUICA on alto, tenor and soprano saxophone is backed onstage by some of Cape Town’s finest musicians on keyboards, drums, guitar, bass guitar and percussion.
(The lineup’s personnel is subject to change depending on the nature of the gig)

Since it’s inception in November 2005, THE MOREIRA PROJECT has played at a number of top festivals including Reconciliation Day, Cape Town Jazzathon, Summer Concerts at Kirstenbosch, 2006 Cape Town International Jazz Festival, numerous top corporate functions, The Gito Baloyi Tribute in Maputo, African Renaissance Heritage Day Festival in Cape Town, Grahamstown Jazz Festival 2007, Joy of Jazz 07 as well as numerous high level prestigious corporate functions. Moreira has just completed three shows playing in The Black Team for Omar Sosa, the Grammy award-winning Cuban pianist.

THE MOREIRA PROJECT Vol 1 – The Journey has just been nominated for three SAMA awards namely for BEST INSTRUMENTAL, BEST CONTEMPORARY JAZZ ALBUM and BEST PRODUCER for MOREIRA CHONGUICA and MARK FRANSMAN – an honour indeed for a debut album on an independent label from Cape Town!

On Friday April 13, 2007 Moreira was awarded the SAMA for BEST PRODUCER alongside MARK FRANSMAN

Moreira was also nominated for the Top Billing/Momentum Awards in the Musicians category for 2006.
