ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
NOT BEFORE TIME

In 1990, Ben stuck a scrap of paper to his wall and drew a picture of himself with an angel next to him. 23 years later, the drawing reappeared and he and his wife realised that he had drawn him and her, years before meeting her. This album is about things like that, so we put the drawing on the cover.

Kicking off with the infectious groove that is 'Pressing Flowers', featuring Ben on Bayan, this tune is guaranteed to get your toes tapping. When you press a flower, it becomes eternal, a frozen moment of beauty. This song is about putting your hope in the right things.

'Don't Ask Alice' was lyrically inspired by the book Go Ask Alice, which was in turn inspired by the lyrics of White Rabbit, which was in turn inspired by Lewis Carroll's book Alice in Wonderland! We are hopefully keeping that thread alive.
"A lot of electroswing is influenced by the big band swing of the 1930's and 1940's, but I wanted to take the genre back a little further - so this is our take on electroswing - 1920's style!" - Ben

'Best of Both Worlds' is a return to folky, trip hop territory. We can all bend to the pressures that surround us. As people we can be a lot like trees being pushed around by the breeze, but we all need to remember our roots: they are what keep us grounded and connected.

'Birds in Flight' - sometimes we don't want to let go of things in our life. This song was written for a plumber who came to fix our boiler once. He had such heartache: his beloved wife had gone off with his best friend. They'd been together since they were really young - and he encouraged her to better herself: so she studied and became educated, and ran away, so although he still really loved her, he had decided to let her go. Although we only knew him for a short moment of our life, the way his story flooded out of him touched us, so we thought we would try to capture it in song.

'Not a Figment' strips it down to piano and cello backing Tixi's gorgeous vocals. In fact, this song was so stripped down, we could feel the bare floorboards with our toes whilst we recorded it. "This world has become bankrupt of love".

'Less Like Me' sees the accordion and bass join the acoustic guitar. We all know someone who we could be more like, but it can be the hardest thing in the world to be less like ourselves. My wife dreamed that she was taken up to Heaven in a car seat, and she was standing on a beach without a sea - a vast and beautiful place - and she could see three white horses, and as she listened, she could hear a song playing. This is that song.

'All or Nothing' is about wanting more! Oliver Twist would approve. Instrumentation on this one includes the xaphoon, a selection of recorders, the autoharp, melodica, a harmonica, a taisho koto...you name it, we used it! This song is about that time when you like someone, and you are just friends, but you want the relationship to blossom into something more...

'It's Never Too Late to Start Again' lifts the tempo, and the lyrics speak for themselves: "I'm no superhero with a cape and an ego to pander to man's whimsical phases - but what I am is what you need, take my hand, trust me: I'll take you places even Disney haven't dreamed, I'll show you how we'll jump ravines."

'Call on Me' This is about our friend who was homeless. He used to live in a bunker. Sometimes people don't want to live the lives they are given... Our friend had had an inheritance stolen from him, but he realised that he had something more valuable than any inheritance he could ever have had.

'Previous Life' was our excuse to use several of our favourite instruments: the hang and the sheng on the same song! This song was based on a letter that we came across - a lady who had lost everything, but was striving to maintain her appearance. Even though she was living in a YMCA, she would still wear her smart clothes. A lady helped her fix her hair every day, and wrote the letter asking people to pray that her life would turn around, and that sentiment moved us to write this song.

ABOUT US

Moth is the pet project of Ben and Tixia Henderson.

Cubinoid, aka '''Ben Henderson''' (born 1971, UK), is an English musician, scriptwriter, songwriter, record producer, and film producer, milliner and goggle wearer. A musician since his childhood, Henderson was raised in Clevedon, the youngest of four children. Henderson has now established a reputation for himself as an Music Technology expert, writer and sound engineer for environmental issues. Some of his album covers are illustrated with his own paintings and drawings.

EARLY LIFE

At age 19, Henderson moved to London to work as a saxophonist for psychedelic rock/funk band Dr. Sky. After a brief period as a DJ in Tenerife, Henderson played sax and congas during the Cactus Park raves in 1991. Upon his return to the United Kingdom, Henderson played with several bands, and was reunited with the bass player Alex Caird, who had been a member of Dr. Sky. Caird invited Henderson to join the band Bôa, who, at the time were a funk band.

Bôa

Ben Henderson joined, toured and recorded with the internationally successful band Bôa. After working on the award winning theme tune for the anime series Serial Experiments Lain, Henderson had given up saxophone, and was composing for Bôa almost exclusively on guitar.

Henderson studied sound engineering and Music Technology at The Institute of Music and Technology, the centre for City and Guilds Music Technology, Sound Engineering and Multimedia, where he now gives lectures on the subject of Music Technology and is the Film Making Head of Department.[3] Henderson is also the organizer for The Performing Arts Marquee at the annual Environmental Fair in Carshalton Park in the UK, one of the biggest events in the London Borough of Sutton.

PLANET OF TUNES

Ben Henderson writes articles and software patches and programs for music and multimedia creators, which are available for free download on the educational Planet of Tunes website.

MOTH

After studying music technology and sound engineering at The Institute of Music and Technology, Henderson left Bôa. Together with classically trained singer songwriter Tina Delgado, Henderson set up the "Black Valve" recording studio and formed the UK band Moth, and recorded and produced Moth's debut album, "Songs for the Lost". Ben married Tina "Tixia" Henderson in 1996 at Staneway Chapel, in Ewell village, UK. He has one daughter, The Engine Stopper, aka Jasmine Henderson. On Easter Sunday, 2009, Moth released 4 albums simultaneously on CDbaby. Not Before Time is their 8th album written, performed, recorded and engineered by Moth.

FILM WORK

Henderson has worked on music videos that have been broadcast in Japan and the USA, and on internet video sharing websites. These include "Twilight" by Bôa, broadcast by MTV.

Henderson has worked on theme tunes for Japanese anime Serial Experiments Lain and the orchestral theme music and incidental score for the superhero film, The Divider. Henderson additionally co-scripted The Divider, collaborating with film producer and director Jim Rogers.

In the summer of 2006, Ben and his family created the "Cubinoid" channel on Youtube mainly starring Frooper and Skimo, two finger puppet characters. The Henderson family film Frooper and Skimo episodes using a webcam, and have achieved the top 22nd most subscribed musician's channel on Youtube. Tixia voices the character of Skimo, and Ben is the voiceover artist for Frooper.

Matt Hawes, creator of The Happy Show featured the first episode of Frooper and Skimo on public access tv. MTV Flux expressed an interest in the Frooper and Skimo videos shortly after the site was launched. Every episode of Frooper and Skimo has since been broadcast in the USA on The Happy Show.

In January 2007, the music video for Moth's "Close the Door" which featured Frooper and Skimo won the Derrick Seagrave Trophy for Best Animation at the Surrey Film Festival held at Guildford’s Electric Theatre. The video featured Puppets, animation and music made by Cubinoid and Tixia, with the video being produced by Sean Phelan.

Following this, Close the door won a further award at The IAC British International Amateur Film Competition 2007.

In January 2008, Henderson authored a course in Film making, which is being delivered by The Institute of Music and Technology, in London. He regularly lectures on the subject of film making and sound for film, as well as working on independent films, and continuing to make Frooper and Skimo episodes.

In 2009, Henderson worked with film maker Michael Franklin on the short film Come into my Office.
2013, extra work acting in The Look of Love (with Steve Coogan, Steven Fry, Matt Lucas, Anna Friel, Imogen Poots, Dir. Michael Winterbottom)

WEBSITE
Ben designed the Moth website at www.bumpandthumper.com with the hope of creating a slightly more interactive experience than a traditional website.

LIVE
Moth play live at least once a week, to small audiences. They favour local open mic nights, but occasionally perform at larger venues - including the Lincoln Asylum, the largest UK Steampunk festival, alongside Tom Slatter and Thomas Truax in 2012. They also organise some of the music, engineer, and perform live at the annual Carshalton Environmental Fair, and the Carshalton Frost Fair, which is organised by Ecolocal.

Thing of Beauty
We've come to expect a certain standard from Moth; lyrics that are real poetry - no schmaltz, a real variety to keep you plugged in and excellent, inventive production - 'Not Before Time' does not disappoint.

I love the energy of 'Pressing Flowers', the melodrama of 'All or Nothing', and the simple honestly of 'Not A Figment' and 'Birds In Flight'.

'Less Like Me' is my favourite on this album, and possibly ever. The fragility of the lyrics and vocals move me to tears - it is quite simply a thing of delicate beauty and something I could never get tired of listening too.
