ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"A fully realized and captivating debut..."
The Minneapolis Star Tribune

Minneapolis Star Tribune, Jim Meyer
Mike Larson of Owatonna may be one of Minnesota's most promising new voices. The longtime literary academic-turned-songwriter, who named his band after a Walker Percy novel, sings with a cool rasp, a la Joe Henry or Lloyd Cole. His soft acoustic tunes are rich yet understated, featuring nice splashes of his own piano work. Still, all that musical beauty is just an invitation to the real reward--poetic reflections that are highly personal yet engaging. With Pachyderm Studio producer Bob DeMaa, The Movies have created a fully realized and captivating debut.

The Squealer, Laura Brandenburg
Here's an impressive debut from Southern Minnesotans Mike Larson and Pete Tellijohn. They've sculpted a collection of graceful folk rock using familiar forms and straightforward constructions. Larson's songs ably express humor and melancholy, or sometimes wryness, that corner where the two emotions meet, but he doesn't venture far beyond regret to take any ultimate risks. Still, the mix of slightly distorted guitar and whiskey vocals on songs like, "There She Goes" satisfies like early morning lovers, warm rain and cigarettes. Recommended.

CAKE, S. C. Isadore
The Movies are a duo (now a trio) rooted in the Joe Henry/Freedy Johnston singer-songwriter ... genre. They are a bit of both. Most of these songs are acoustic-based with bare-bones production, using bits of steel and B-3 sparingly. Mike Larson's world weary delivery focuses on various relationships in everyday life. If you're up for something a little more thoughtful and introspective, this fits the bill nicely.

Midwest Music Review, 1997
