ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Genesis:

Mundo Brew’s early origins are shrouded in the mist of dimming memories. What can be said with a fair degree of historical accuracy is that a band answering to that name played into the wee hours of a Monday morning at the Hideaway Saloon in Louisville, Kentucky sometime in the fall of 2013. Thank you, Cynthia. You were a wonderful audience.

But even before that auspicious debut, the Brew was a spark in the effervescent eyes of Cláudio, though he knew it not. And when the spark ignited, there was Jorge. And there was Brad. And there was Chris. And there were instruments. And they played them. And that, my friends, led to something called música (because the Brew would not be content with English). And there was ritmo. And, finally, there was a batida sagrada da alegria pulsando a saudade que nadava dentro de um rio de lágrimas. You simply can’t say that in English. It means something completely different.

And there were songs. They came out of the fog of longing and passionate hope. And the Brew caught them and played them.

And Jorge heard the call of the sinking city by the beach and bade the Brew adieu. And Doug came a-piping. And there was JoJo and there was Izzy. Burns drove across a wide state and lent us his soul. And Johnny laid a firm foundation. And now the songs are caught and passed on in a new form, borne along by the force of love, the power that surpasses everything else under heaven above.

Which brings us to Narges, who inspired most of the compositions, and whose spirit is the Love Force that keeps us moving every day. We love you. We miss you.

We hope it makes you dance.

Gratitude:

Deep thanks to all the friends and family who supported the venture from start to finish: Cláudio Carvalhaes, Jorge Sayago-Gonzalez, Jane Larsen-Wigger, David Wigger, Cora Wigger, Beth Crawford Yeager, Burns Stanfield, John McClure, Annie McClure, Joan Dayton, and everyone who cheered us on when we were trying to figure it all out.

Rev. Henry Highland Garnet inspired the lyrics to “Resist!” and its opening line quotes his famous speech before the National Negro Convention, Buffalo, New York, August 1843.

Amanda Nichols (1977-2014) gave crucial support to the Elwood-Moshiri family in hard times, and her lovely, short life inspired “Beautiful World.”

Narges Moshiri (1959-2013) supplied the smile in “Marchinha do Seu Sorriso.”
