ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Museum walks in Spain, France, Japan and the United States inspired the making of these musical dialogues with visual art. In compositions that balance structure with improvisation, each piece offers imaginative ways of experiencing visual art through music. “Circus to Constellations” celebrates the art of Calder and Miró and the friendship between them. The “Picasso Suite” captures the thoughtful, experimental, and at times playful dialogue between Picasso’s art and the many artists he influenced. “At the Museum” explores contrasting landscapes by Monet, Zóbel, Matisse and Gaudí as well as images from Japanese prints by Yoshitoshi, Utamaro and Hokusai.

Track Descriptions

1. CIRCUS TO CONSTELLATIONS, fantasy for violin and piano, 2006
Celebrating the humor and inspiration in the art of Alexander CALDER
and Joan MIRÓ and the friendship between them.

2.-8. PICASSO SUITE, six movements for violin and piano, 2007
Picasso and the American artists he influenced.
SFMOMA Artcast inspired by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art exhibit,
“Picasso and American Art”

2. Movement, Contour, Shadow
Experiencing Pablo PICASSO’s brush strokes & spontaneous imagination.

3. Colonial Cubism
Leaping into Stuart DAVIS’ colorful Colonial Cubism.

4. Suspended Counterpoint
A playful interpretation of the dots, circles & lines from Picasso’s "The Studio".

5. Reaction
Vibrant echoes of the impact of "Guernica" on the world.

6. Still Life
Homage to Picasso.

7. Dialogue in Deconstruction
A musical interpretation of Picasso’s visual language.

8.-12. AT THE MUSEUM
five miniatures for violin, cello and piano, 2008 & 2009

8. Landscapes of Light: air… light… wind… water…
A soundscape inspired by Fernando ZÓBEL’s abstract paintings of Cuenca, Spain,
paired with Claude MONET’s lush scenes of his garden in Giverny, France.

9. Rhythms from Life: whimsical…primal…ethereal
A promenade through the archetypal energies and rhythms found in Antoni
GAUDÍ and Henri MATTISE’s work. Transcending the time in which they were
created, Matisse’s forms continue to surprise and delight, and Gaudí’s
architecture looks as alive as the organic forms that inspired them.

10. Spirit : sorrow
Under a full moon’s still light, a beautiful spirit appears. As the wind circles
around her and a distant temple bell rings, she remembers her past life and
confronts the depth of her grief. Inspired by Tsukioka YOSHITOSHI "One
Hundred Views of the Moon".

11. Summer Garden: peace
A Japanese summer garden filled with images of Kitagawa UTAMARO’s popular
subjects… birds, flowers, insects and lovely women.

12. Celebration: joy
A matsuri, or Japanese street festival, meanders through Tokyo.
Inspired by Katsushika HOKUSAI’s exuberant woodblock prints.

All compositions by Aenea Mizushima Keyes (1964- ).

Performed by MusicAEterna: Aenea Mizushima Keyes, violinist-composer; Michael Graham, cello; Miles Graber, piano.
