ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
MPUMC Chancel Choir is the keystone of Myers Park United Methodist Church’s music ministry. Under the direction of organist and choral conductor, James R. Jones, the 75 voice choir sings weekly for the 9:45 and 11:00 AM worship services and also participates in special concerts throughout the year. The choir has commissioned and debuted works by nationally acclaimed composers, including Jeremy Bankson, René Clausen, Dan Forrest, Raymond Liebau, and Stephen Paulus, and has also led worship at Duke Chapel, Wesley Chapel (London), Salzburg Cathedral (Austria), as well as Evensong at Bristol Cathedral (UK). Making their European debut in the summer of 2013, and followed by a second tour in 2015, the Chancel Choir presented concerts at Christ Church (Oxford), Bristol Cathedral, and Bath Abbey in the United Kingdom, St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Vienna), and St. Giles Church (Nymburk) and The Church of the Holy Savior (Prague) in the Czech Republic. Other musical offerings include annual Christmas concerts and special music for high holy day services. In 2016, the choir performed Haydn’s Creation, which included the commissioning of seven new pieces of art, representing the seven days of creation, in support of UMAR, a United Methodist organization which works with adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. In 2017, the choir mounted a production of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass of Peace, with chamber orchestra and lighting effects, which they took on the road to The Riverside Church in New York City. In 2019, a new major choral/orchestral work will be premiered at MPUMC. Craig Hella-Johnson, grammy winning choral artist, will compose the work in honor of Mr. Jones.

Chamber Singers is an auditioned ensemble which performs in worship services, church events, and at selected events in the community. In addition, the Chamber Singers has led worship at Duke Chapel and Evensong at Bristol Cathedral (UK). The ensemble has also been a participant in local recitals sponsored by the American Guild of Organists.

Myers Park Bells is the premier five-plus octave handbell ensemble at our church. The group is under the direction of Rev. Brian Childers. The gift of a new set of Malmark handbells this past year, in memory of Chancel Choir member Sandra Eubanks, has been a key factor in the recent exponential growth of our handbell program, which includes six ensembles for all ages and experience levels of players.

da Capo Brass is a national touring ensemble dedicated to performing quality chamber music to diverse audiences. Performing standard repertoire ranging from Classical to Jazz, Renaissance to Modern, and Pops to Gospel, da Capo Brass also enjoys collaborating with talented composers to create new music for the brass quintet medium. The members of da Capo Brass believe in removing boundaries between the concert performer and audiences, and therefore seek out performance experiences beyond traditional concert halls, with venues including churches, art museums, public schools, and clubs. In addition to their active concert schedule, members of the quintet perform internationally as soloists and in conjunction with professional organizations in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. They hold teaching positions at various colleges and academies in North Carolina and perform with orchestras across the East Coast.

Ms. Brouwer has been involved in the commissioning and performances of new works, including the premiere of Here, the Cliffs, a concerto by Hilary Tann. Her projects have won numerous awards, including selection for a national Meet the Composer Award. Ms. Brouwer has appeared as a soloist with the North Carolina Symphony, the Portland (Maine) Symphony, the Winston-Salem Symphony, Canton (Ohio) Symphony, Arizona Musicfest Orchestra, and Sunriver Festival Orchestra among others. Past chamber music appearances have included the International Bartok Festival, and the Saugatuck Chamber Music Festival. A former director of the Community Music School of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), Ms. Brouwer has also taught violin at Wake Forest University, UNCSA, Catawba College, Montreat College and the National Suzuki Institute in Wisconsin. Currently, she maintains a private studio in Winston-Salem and is the owner of Allegro Music, Inc.
