What IS a curate's egg anyway?
It's a family affair. Although we suposedly know very little about the Mystery Lady, her sons and husband are named, her sons produced and engineered, her husband is executive producer, there's a contact address, and her picture's on the cover, so basically this is the 21st century version of David Soul's singer with a bag over his head. Oddly enough this CD has more than a little soul as well (Bad pun. Sorry).

The mystery lady writes songs that fall somewhere between modern R&B and Millie Jackson, and she sings in a slighltly husky disco-diva voice that I personally find a blessed relief from the Christina Beyonspears that abound all over my radio (Swat swat). The material is about half and half high quality and filler, which, while not ideal, is still better than yer average 'Clone with no clothes on' chart album.

What does let the album down is the backing, which sounds like a Space Invaders machine. This voice deserves a proper band. That and maybe a couple more of the stronger songs (I could be doing the record a disservice here. It's possible this was a genuine attempt at diversity) would make this album a killer. As it is it still deserves your attention on the strength of the material, which makes a change from the usual method (The number of times you're gonna be holding the cover in one hand).
