ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
America would not be the place it is today if it were not for slavery. Some of the most talented people to ever live were slaves. Though often unfairly beaten and mistreated, the slaves knew that their survival depended upon obedience to their earthly masters and faith in the Master. Their solace was found in the field songs, that later became known as Spirituals. Many of the songs were codes to other slaves; yet others were expressions of faith, hoping to be free one day in this world or in death.

Homage to the Journey has a couple of meanings for me. I understand that if it were not for the sacrifices of my ancestors, I would not be afforded the freedom of sharing my gift with the world. The granddaughter and daughter of great gospel singers, I grew up in the church. Introduced to Spirituals at an early age, I began to sing, thinking that my talent was only good for church. I thank those who pushed me into my destiny, beyond the sacred walls.

As a classically-trained performer, my desire was to take a journey from the field songs to the present, incorporating gospel, jazz, and classical music.

Musicians on the project are Cris Brenham (piano, keyboard, organ) Kirk Nobles (trumpet) TaRon Lockett (drums) Benjamin Parker (bass)

Please enjoy my Homage to the Journey!

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.
~ Ephesians 5:19
