PROSE BIO - NANCY MARANO

Nancy Marano, vocalist, pianist and jazz educator has been consistently lauded by critics, audiences and colleagues as one of the finest musicians working today. She has been profiled by Whitney Balliett in The New Yorker, by Dr. Billy Taylor on CBS Sunday Morning, by Terry Teachout in The Wall Street Journal, and in an extensive interview by Jazz Improv Magazine, and most recently by NPR Station WRTI-FM "Crossover," a one-hour broadcast with Producer Jill Pasternack and Dr. Jack Buerkle.

As a result of her recording "If You Could See Us Now!" with arrangements by Manny Albam played by the 62-piece Netherlands Metropole Orchestra, Dr. Herb Wong of the IAJE Journal named her "Top 4 Jazz Vocalists of the Year."

Nancy has to date recorded 6 CDs as a leader, and two as guests of Benny Carter and Dick Hyman. She has also recorded with Gerry Mulligan, Michel Legrand, Claudio Roditi, and Roger Kellaway. Her latest CD, SURE THING, features Nancy as vocalist, pianist, and arranger, and includes the talents of Michael Abene, Michael Moore, Grady Tate and John Mosca.

Nancy has appeared in several major European Jazz Festivals including The North Sea three years, and in the USA with Barry Harris, Benny Carter and with her duo at the JVC Jazz Festival in New York, as well as on The Floating Jazz Festival. With her quartet, Nancy has performed at the IAJE in San Antonio, Women In Jazz in Wash, DC, Absolute Grappelli, with Stephane Grappelli, and in LA with the Henry Mancini Institute Big Band. Most recently Nancy was guest artist with the Radio Big Band of Slovenia. She has performed with the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra and in jazz clubs and concert halls in every major city in the United States.

Nancy is a most sought-after clinician, and is very active in and committed to Jazz Education internationally. For the third year, Nancy has been invited to teach with MSM Faculty in an annual summer jazz program at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Nancy has taught in Amsterdam Rotterdam, and Delft in an artist-in-residence capacity.

A favorite of Barry Harris, Nancy joined Barry in a three-program series at Town Hall for young children of New York schools. She has been a member of the faculty of The Manhattan School of Music for 16 years, William Paterson University for 6 years, and a guest vocal jazz teacher of other New York area jazz programs, such as Long Island University. SUNY Purchase and The New School. Nancy also conducts her own bi-weekly jazz vocal workshop in Manhattan called "Sessions In Song and Swing," and runs series of classes called "Musicianship for the Jazz Vocalist," She is currently working on writing her first methods book of the same title.

Nancy is also the Editor of the Vocal Lead Sheets to the Bill Evans Fakebooks, Volumes

JAZZTIMES

Ms. Marano is a singer best appreciated within the quiet folds of evening.
Marano focuses on familiar standards in less than familiar settings. There is a superbly gentle versions of Frishberg's underappreciated "Heart's Desire." Saving the best for last Nancy closes with a medley of "Never Let Me Go" and "Goodbye" that brilliantly counterbalances the before and after of romantic desperation. JAZZTIMES

Throughout the disc, Ms. Marano's tapering sustained tones with their breathy undercoating are a joy to hear. Her phrasing is natural and elastic. Her intelligence and dramatic flair inform the stories she sings. The two tracKs on which she provides her own piano accompaniment are intimate and extraordinary. ALAN BARGEBUHR

AMG Expert Review

Nancy Marano's magical voice has reached a new peak with SURE THING
Nancy covers a wide range of material, including standards, overlooked gems, and strong jazz compositions as well. She wrote most of the arrangements herself, except for the Michael Abene's 4 charts. This recording is highly recommended! KEN DRYDEN

ALL ABOUT JAZZ

Marano is a legitimate heiress to Ella, Sarah, & Carmen.
Marano uses great latitude in the way she approaches her music, so that every offering refreshes. Her ability to change tonal qualities is evident in the soli sections of "So In Love" - invoking a 'little big-band' sound. On "The Man I Love" her slow, sensuous scatting melts into her own piano accompaniment. 'Voluptuous' is the word for "My One & Only Love" with Michael Abene as accompanist.
