ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Confluence emerged from a gathering of musical friends, old and new, who connected through the vision and generosity of Kim Borgatta.

A concert that Kim attended sparked an idea to offer the core trio of Confluence (David Michael, Nancy Rumbel and Benjy Wertheimer) an opportunity to record a music project. She had loved their music for many years and longed to hear what they might sound like together. Though they had never all worked together, they admired each other’s work and each was excited by the idea.

In January 2018 their busy schedules finally allowed time to begin recording. Their very first improvisation, in Benjy’s recording studio, became the basis for the piece Saraswati’s Grace. Their individual playing styles, artistic sensitivities and sense of adventure spawned a stream of ideas. After two days of recording, Confluence was well underway.

These early improvisations laid the foundation for many of the pieces, after which friends added their beautiful contributions. David, Nancy and Benjy then crafted and honed the mixes that grew to become Confluence – a project blending love of music, friends, and devotion.

“It has been a blessing to make this recording and we feel great gratitude to Kim for her idea, generosity, patience and openness of heart and mind.” – David, Nancy & Benjy

A true "Confluence" of wonder.
Confluence is a perfect name for this album. I have been a big fan of David Michael for decades and have most his CDs; his music has allows me to travel in my mind from sea to mountain top and through his music I have become acquainted with his musical friends, many of which are on this disc. But Confluence is different. Whereas most of David's previous CDs have been his music, this album is strongly influenced by the collaboration with Nancy and Benjy. New themes and rhythms abound and it is much more uptempo than David's previous works. The confluence of musicians with the east versus west styles has truly woven a grand tapestry of beauty. I've already listened to it over and over. I'm sure you'll be happy with it too!

Absolutely stunning!
This is acoustic world fusion at its finest. The musicians weave in and out of a melodic and rhythmic conversation taking you on an exotic journey that I find both uplifting and inspiring. The combination of sonorous double-reeds, bright and rhythmic Celtic harp and evocative pitched percussion is unique. Very little music is composed for harp and oboe, but this album is certain to inspire more collaboration between these instruments. Add the melodic groove of the tabla and you hear layers of sound with each voice carrying an equal role. Confluence is the perfect title. The streams of sound connect and flow seamlessly together and the music is both rich and clear with a contagious pulse. Rumbel, Michael, Werheimer and their guest artists are all masters of their instruments and in this album, the shared joy of creating music together is palpable.

The title track, Confluence is my favorite. I can play it over and over again and still feel a surge of positive energy. I am drawn into the passion in the piece Incantation which opens with the deep bass strings of the harp. Saraswati’s Grace brings you on a journey to India and the lightness of the harp adds a celestial quality. This piece was the beginning of the trio’s collaboration and gives space for each instrument to share their unique voice.

I have been a longtime fan of David Michael. His compositions and recordings with the Celtic harp have brought a breath of fresh air to the often predictable library of harp music.
Nancy Rumbel truly sings through her instruments. Her tone is rich, colorful and dynamic. It is rare to hear the oboe and English horn performed with such freedom.
Benjy Wertheimer’s rhythmic pulse invites improvisations and is a clear voice in the trio. I can’t wait to find a tabla player to perform with me. Thank you for the inspiration!

The sound quality and mixing are all world class. Each instrument sounds glorious. I highly recommend this album for absolutely everyone.
