ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The most meaningful part of being a concert artist is having the opportunity to converse with audiences after a performance. Even when fatigue, a technical glitch, or a broken air conditioner could have easily destroyed a show, music has always found a way to comfort and inspire people. Whether it’s a story about being transported to a special place, remembering a loved one, or using restraint to avoid dancing in the aisle (I never discourage dancing), hearing comments from listeners is a reminder that music speaks to eveyone in different, often unpredictible, ways. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to share my music with so many wonderful people using such a unique and treasured instrument.

The pipe organ is the most dynamic, mechanically complex, and versatile musical instrument ever conceived. Thousands of individually-tuned pipes ranging from the size of a pencil to thirty-two feet in length are controlled by the organist as a conductor would maniuplate the members of an orchestra. The sound is made entirely from pressurized air resonating inside of pipes or causing mallets to strike a surface. Not a single speaker, microphone, or computer is involved in producing the sound of the organ on this album.

This collection of music showcases the pipe organ as one member of a musical ensemble. Drums, strings, horns, and other sounds are featured in prerecorded backup tracks that I created using a MIDI keyboard, a sequencing software, and a variety of virtual instrument samples. These samples are often recordings of actual instruments programmed one note at a time to create nuanced performances that sound like real musicians. By playing the backup tracks through a sound system, every track on this album can be replicated in live performance.

Throughout its history the theatre organ has evolved to meet the demands of many occupations including accompanying silent films, demonstrating hi-fi recording technology, providing music for roller skaters, and entertaining families at pizza parlors. It is with that same spirit of innovation and collaboration that I present Synthesis.

But this album is not simply a love letter to the pipe organ. This is music made to inspire love, compassion, humor, and happiness. I dedicate this album to all the creatives, free thinkers, and open-minded go-getters of the world.

Let music drive us all to make the world a better place!

-Nathan
