Album Notes
Music is all about live performance. Without the listener - performer connection, music does not exist in its purest form – thus, live performance has always been the most honest, the most dangerous, and the most exciting way to experience music. This release showcases my interest in the live presentation of this music, and how I try to create a connection to the audience.

Rhythm-a-ning: I’ve always been fascinated and inspired by the music of Thelonious Monk, and this arrangement seeks to capture and highlight some of the unique angularity of Monk’s style – and the cats in the rhythm section are swinging!

Wild Bill: A blues inspired by John Coltrane’s “Mr. Day” and named after a pet parakeet, Billy.

Atoll: This composition is about finding calm in the storm, an atoll for the heart.

‘Round Midnight: Another monumental composition from Thelonious Monk. Drawing on the inspiration of personal experience and the interpretations of greats like Art Blakey and Miles Davis, I sought to create my own take on this great tune.

The 1st of April (for Vienna): A waltz dedicated to the city of Vienna, Austria, and more importantly to the friends and experiences I had while living there. Written on April 1st, 2015, the weather that day wandered between sunshine and hail on almost regular intervals.

Star Eyes: A classic tune from 1940s Hollywood, and one that many giants of the alto saxophone liked to play.

Swingin’ at the Haven: An Ellis Marsalis composition. In his own words, “the Haven was an illustration of the fact that free enterprise also affords you the right to fail”, speaking about a nightclub he once owned. I always loved this tune, with its dancing piano ostinato, and knew I had to record it.
