Album Notes
Winner of the prestigious Muses Muse 'Best Instrumental CD of Year Award' for 2005, E-Kamen plays more than a dozen instruments from around the world in this ground-breaking critically acclaimed New Age Jazz collection. A "Native Unit" of New York City, E-Kamen was strongly affected by the multiple tragedies of 9-11 and found a need within him to play "Love Songs for the World."

The CD is a fusion of contemporary beats and exotic sounds played in a New Age, Jazz style.

Eric Kamen, born and raised in New York City, approached music at a young age unveiling a sense of deep trust and profound fascination. "I am self-taught, never took a lesson. I play music as one would talk, no thought involved. It just comes out," explains E.

During his school years, Kamen apprenticed as a musician, playing with local bands in the New York music scene. After college, he spent a year traveling around the Mediterranean, expanding his musical horizons to expressive cultural sounds. Influenced by the Flamenco guitar, Greek rembetika, North African percussion and French chanson, the emerging musician added rare distinctiveness to his musical imagination.

"I played music professionally, from ages 13 to 28 [bands, studio work]. Of course, the exposure to all the other musicians I was hanging around vastly increased my understanding of music theory," E explains. Kamen's personal exploration into all music genres, recording, and engineering propelled his career as a hip-hop and R&B producer. While collaborating with up and coming singers and songwriters is an endearing process for Kamen, his debut solo CD breaks formulaic standards of contemporary popular music.

Eric Kamen's debut world fusion CD embodies a unique presence combining modern beats with old world melodies and instruments. Kamen's manifestations as musician, traveler, and producer provide a clear vantage point from which to carry his music to the masses. Native Unit embraces delicate, soulful grooves and signifies deeper messages about the unity of mankind and the universal language of music. E elaborates, "In retrospect, I can see that the beautiful effect of mixing various world music themes actually makes a poignant statement about the sadness of the current state of the world. I think it was my subconscious way of coping with what is going on in the world today."

In 2005, The Muse's Muse also selected the track, "Mykonos At Midnight," as Best Instrumental Song of the Year. "This project will appeal to hardcore hip-hop fans, jazz enthusiasts, and world music lovers alike..." raves The Muse's Muse. Kweevak Music Magazine praises, "A magical blend...melding the edge of hip-hop with the soul of R&B."

E is for excellent!
E aptly handles all the instruments and programming on his debut CD. His music is a magical blend of world instrumentation, modern production and diverse styling. E's twelve instrumentals are colorful and complex. The mood from song to song can range from determined to dreamy. The CD is varied yet cohesive as tempos and textures ebb and flow smoothly into each other. I appreciated the entire album but particularly enjoyed the creativity of 'Moshi Moshi, 'Take A Ride' and 'Mykonos At Midnight'. Native Unit is a musical soundscape melding the edge of hip-hop with the soul of R&B and flavored with sounds from around the world. E is for excellent!

Winner of the Best Instrumental CD of the Year 2005 Award
Eric's blend of Flamenco guitar, bass, piano, and Indian sitar, with commercial, contemporary grooves is almost scientific, and nothing short of phenomenal. This project will appeal to hardcore hip-hop fans, jazz enthusiasts, and world music lovers alike...

'... musically captivating ... nothing short of phenomenal'
CD Review: What happens when you blend contemporary r&b and hip hop beats with some very serious World music, which features Spanish guitar, other world stringed instruments and a touch of acoustic piano? You get a flavorful project that's musically captivating.

Eric Kamen (who simply goes by "E"), was born and raised in New York City, and is also a successful r&b/hip-hop producer. He programmed the beats and plays every instrument on this project including Flamenco guitar, bass, piano, Indian sitar, as well as Greek and Turkish bouzouki. The blend of these instruments with commercial, contemporary grooves is almost scientific, and nothing short of phenomenal. This project will appeal to hardcore hip hop fans, jazz enthusiasts, and world music lovers alike.

The most commercial track, "Mykonos At Midnight,"emanates sensuality on a bed of percolating beats and melodic guitar playing. It's infectious and would surely light up radio switch boards with requests. Unlike so many projects, this is not a two single CD. This project needs to be consumed in it's entirety because the tracks blend together harmoniously, and sweetly, like chocolate, cararmel, and nuts - all of which are tasty on their own but when blended, are more delectable.

'... nothing less than superb ... I loved it'
Eric Kamen lives in two worlds, as a producer in Hip Hop and R & B and as E with his own recording endeavors on an album called Native Unit. All tracks were composed, produced, engineered, and played by Eric Kamen on the new release. When you read something like this it's "ok, people do this all the time, all you have to do is mix it, right?" Well, there is a little more to it than that. First, you must be very diverse, knowing all your instruments are obviously a key component even if they were produced electronically. Putting together a composition, then pulling all of it together with today's technology is the final step. This man did it all; I congratulate him wholeheartedly because the results are nothing less than superb. Besides the guitar, there is a lot of midi music, and to my surprise, it sounds very good. It all has a nice body and texture to it and I think the guitar is what makes it all sound so colorful. Far be it me to put down electronic and processed music, hey, if can sound this good, go for it! I guess it all depends on who is manipulating it. It is definitely the Spanish Guitar that lays the foundation though, everything else is the bricks to build the house on.

The music on Native Unit is all instrumental. Actually, I like to call this instrumental bliss - when I refer to a CD in this light it means I loved it. Instrumental jazz fusion is the modus operandi here, and it comes at you from all corners of the globe. I heard African rhythms, Middle-Eastern moods, Latin, and Flamenco guitar, World, all of this and more with an underlying foundation that I believe stems from the blues. It makes sense that it all started with the blues, although this music does not sound anything like it, I know that most music of this nature was the offspring of the genre, and so was jazz, so when you put that all together you have steaming brew, a multicultural musical delicatessen.

'... musical synergy that speaks volumes of his creative songwriting'
Multi-instrumentalist and producer E shows off his skills on his debut album “Native Unit” with stand-up performances on your standard band outfit’s guitar, drums, bass, but also adds in sitar, bouzouki, and piano. In addition to his great skill-set he also produced and engineered the entire album. Style-wise it’s an update to urban contemporary as the album builds on the established sounds of R&B with Latin fusion, rock, soul, and New Age. Each song carries its own atmosphere lifting it high above the clouds for a musical synergy that speaks volumes of his creative songwriting.

I am in a bit of shock. This music took me to another world, one of deep sensuality. This beautiful sexy music, moved me beyond words. The arrangements are superb. The flanenco guitar, is captivating. And no I do not know Eric Kamen, but I would love to meet him and see him play live. Where and when man?

Very beautiful music..

New Artist Eric Kamen Dazzles on "Native Unit"
This instrumental CD is just beautiful! Eric Kamen is such a talented musician and I am so glad a friend introduced me to this album. I have never heard anything like it before. The songs are a mixture of world/new age/r&b music with an international flair and exotic sound. From the infectious percussion beats that hint at a hip-hop feel, to the Spanish guitar and chimes, this album transports you away to another world that is a blend of all different cultures and landscapes.

This is a great soundtrack for just chilling, to set the mood, do work to, or for driving in the car. "Moshi Moshi" is my favorite track so far, but you really need to listen to the CD from start to finish to get the real feel and idea of what Kamen envisioned. I absolutely recommend buying this album and I hope that Kamen continues to spread his brilliant musical talents in future projects. I will definitely be there supporting them.

This Jazz fusion is a gift to world-weary travelers
It’s steamy and seductive, hypnotic and haunting. Eric Kamen's Native Unit CD is filled with the ultra-lush sounds of Spanish guitar, acoustic piano, bass, drums, bazukis, sitar, strings, tubular bells, and Japanese Koto. Listening to this fused Jazz collection makes me feel less world-weary! It is like a beautiful musical oasis, where I can go and shut the door behind me!

Produced as a series of "first takes" it has that raw here-and-now honesty and freshness that is lacking in so much of the current "spin" music... you must hear it! And then you are going to want to own it!
