Album Notes
Reviews in response to "Lock up your Sons" Uptown.... Winnipeg's blues community is small and close-knit -sometimes almost insular. And when one of it's own steps out, he or she has the full support of everyone involved, musically and otherwise. So it is that Debra Lyn Neufeld, Winnipeg's foremost blueswoman, slips from the vault and onto centre stage with 12 stunning tracks which showcase not only her keen knowledge of the form-lyrically and musically- butalso the shining abilities of those with whom she works. This album is a seamless whole, a Chicago-style rip-snorter that flows smoothly from the guitar-drenched opener, "So Hard", to the shuffle of "I'm Alright"and the uptempo, hand jive inspired romp of "Attitude Town". Outstanding sidemen, include guitarist Chris Carmichael(he's my brother-in-law,yes,but the guy can play)vocalist Scotty Hills and drummer Ken McMahon, who holds everything together and makes it seem easy. Winnipeg Free Press..............WHERE YOU'LL FIND HER: Messing with the boys at the blues bar.FILE UNDER: The Raitt Stuff. LOWDOWN;Debra Lyn Neufeld is not exactly a shrinking violet. At least not on "Lock up your Sons" Gritty, gutsy, rough and ready-and aided by a slate of local blues MVP's like The Perpetrators- Neufeld delivers sizzling, smoking, sexy blues-rockers in the vein of early Bonnie Raitt. Extra points for writing her own tunes instead of covering classics-though, frankly, most of these dozen cuts are so authentic you'd never know they weren't straight from Chicago. Not bad for a gal who didn't pick up a guitar until age 30. ON THE WEB; Some things just don't translate to the internet.

Lots to like and it keeps growing on you
Nice CD runs from solid, grinding blues work to lighter and more upbeat rock (a few cuts almost country-rock in flavor). Debra Lyn has an engaging voice and plays lead here with emotion and ability. There's lots to like on a first listen, but I'm struck even more by how much I've grown to like a number of songs after repeated listening, including a few I initially disliked. For a sense of her range and writing, check out Evil One or Heavy Weight and then have a listen to Sweet Insane or Do What You Do. Great album title and album cover (CDBaby shows the back side) too! The sound is just right. Not overproduced and in a few places, still rough around the edges. Looking forward to more from Debra Lyn and hope she can build the audience she deserves.
