Description:
We are very proud of this DVD release. This is the beginning of a series of DVD's and CD's of live performances culled from gigs or rehearsals. This DVD was a live rehearsal recorded at Ronnie's studio "The Center For Free thought." Don't expect fancy camera angles, just capturing this bands performance of complex instrumentals. The songs included, 3 of which will be on the new "Stupid Like Cow" CD, and 2 extended jams, one of them based off the tune "Face" from "Sweat Hog." We originally were just recording it for our own heads but were so happy with the tight performance we felt it had to be released. We think you'll not only notice the accurate performance but the vibe between members. There are huge areas of improv jamming that just take off into outer space. No overdubs, just pure live music! We really think this is a gem - YOU GOTTA HAVE IT!

"The music business isn't about promoting art, it's about promoting superstardom, music is now just the vehicle and it's an old broken down Pinto."
- Ronnie Neuhauser (composer / guitarist)

From the eclectic concept CD the 'Congregation Against Styrocultural Brain Damage' where Ronnie fuses rock, jazz, funk, avant-garde, spoken word, Latin bits, along with operatic slants and hints of something you might come across in a musical yet more raw, to the instrumental CD 'Sweat Hog' with very progressive rock arrangements and funky, jazzy overtones. One might ask where next?
The recently released DVD 'Styrocultural Antidote Bootlegs' Styrocultural Antidote Volume One' has some answers. The DVD is a recording of live excerpts from the bands 12/19/02 rehearsal at Ronnie's Studio ' The Center for Free Thought' and includes wonderful raw performances of very orchestrated moments along with lots of stretching through improvisation.

The Styrocultural Antidote band focuses on Ronnie's instrumental music for trio. The C.A.S.B.D. project focuses on lyrical and instrumental compositions for a much larger more theatrical band. Future projects slated should ensure Ronnie's place in pushing boundaries in orchestration and improvisation through experimentation along with scathing sociopolitical commentary.

Ronnie hopes to record his avant-garde rock opera this year called 'Gangr'ear.' The opera is completely written. The follow up Styrocultural Antidote trio CD called 'Stupid Like Cow' shows the band really stretching into new areas. Ronnie's new musical theory, which he has been working on for a few years, will show up throughout the CD, and beyond. The 'Stupid Like Cow' CD is laced with wild timings, unusual chord changes, metric modulations, multiple tempos, colliding families of sound, and heavy improvisation. Ron is also currently working on a CD tentatively titled 'It's all about the Grass.' This will continue the trend only more to the extreme, along with the aforementioned fiery sociopolitical observations.

Other projects slated for 2003, and 2004 are videos. One Ron is working on with 'wunderkind' Paris Mancini is for 'Liberation From The Jackal' from the 'Sweat Hog' CD. Also, a video of a tune called 'The Shakespeare Lady' (song for Margaret) about the brilliant actor Margaret Holloway who earned a masters degree from the Yale School of Drama and was stricken with schizophrenia. She is now homeless and performs on the streets of New Haven, CT. Ron also hopes to continue the Bootleg series with compositions recorded in rehearsals and live shows. All in all, we hope the future to be very interesting so come along for the journey!

REVIEW BY CT. MUSIC
Styrocultural Antidote Bootlegs - Volume One (DVD)
Article by: Keith - 5/7/2003

Along with his latest cd 'Sweat Hog', Ronnie Neuhauser sent me a DVD containing live excerpts from 'The Center For Free Thought'. The DVD contains five songs of Ronnie with bassist Mike Perez and drummer Fran Merante doing what they do best - jammin'!

A clip from the liner notes sum it up best - 'wonderful moments orchestrated and improvised'. Each song has a rough structure in which each musician is allowed to explore, and watching each of them play is a joy for anyone who's ever tackled mastering an instrument.

The production is rough - only one or two camera angles - but the meaning shines through. And in these early stages of home DVD production, Ronnie has once again gone beyond expectations to produce something that displays his commitment to communicating his vision.

For an idea of the music on the DVD, see the earlier reviews of his CDs.

My suggestion? Get this DVD, grab some popcorn, and enjoy the grooves...
