Album Notes
At age 12 I began my journey as a composer, writing songs while still attempting to teach myself how to play the guitar. I took a similar path with the piano at 14, developing my own harmonic language by trial and error and using the instrument as a medium for further development as a writer.

My “formal” training was in the form of vocal work throughout high school: Chorus; Madrigal; Barber Shop Quartet; Musical Theater. In college, I played the “coffee house circuit” as a singer / songwriter opening for both local and national Artists including: Vince Bell; Guy Clark; Lightning Hopkins; Willis Alan Ramsey.

I went on to play in various groups within both the jazz and rock genres throughout the 70’s & 80’s while also bringing my musical experiences to theater in the form of: sound design; performance as actor & musician; directing & producing; composing original music. I continue to write music both in song form (words & music) and instrumental works.

My various influences & inspirations come from a diverse set of sources: from jazz & rock; to classical & folk; R&B to "avant garde". Major influences include: Jack Bruce; Bill Bruford; David Crosby; Herbie Hancock; Henry Cow; Charles Ives; King Crimson; Charles Mingus; Joni Mitchell; Lara Nyro; Kenny Rankin; Todd Rundgren; Sly Stone; Ralph Towner; Brian Wilson.

Here's what folks are saying about my latest CD, NewK: The Purity of Habit & Home:
“This is really beautiful music. Great chord changes and melodies. ‘Like the lyrics too. Had no idea he was this kind of a musician. I’m very impressed.” – Jon Cowherd

"So impressed by your writing and beautiful playing. I love your singing so much, your emotion and connection to the lyrics and stories. Love the dedications too.” – Luciana Souza

"An artist who I have loved for a very long time has released a touching and wonderful new EP. NewK explores life and love through an astonishing array of melody, harmony and key changes, that continually challenge, surprise and delight. John lives with sincerity which communicates in every moment of this music. Please take a quiet moment and listen to songs straight from a beautiful heart.” – Anita C. Smith: Denver, CO
