ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The NEW STANDARD TRIO was founded in 2001 by the Dutch contrabassist and composer Jasper Somsen. New standards are the way you treat pop music repertoire within a jazz context. Most of the compositions are newly arranged to fit this personnel, in such a way it’s obtaining a more artistic approach. Improvisation is one of the key parts within this format. Since 2005 all band members also added their own original compositions to the repertoire.

The NEW STANDARD TRIO is:
Jasper Somsen – Contrabass
Folker Tettero – Guitars
Ron Kesteloo – Drums
2001 : First demo recording
2002 : First gigs in The Netherlands, feat. Eric Vloeimans (trumpet) and Frido ter Beek (sax)
2003 : Release of the album CD “Footsteps” – the music of Sting (featuring Frido ter Beek)
2004 : More gigs in the Netherlands, featuring their new saxophonist Ad Colen
2005 - 2006 : Masterclasses at the Dutch Conservatories in Alkmaar and Utrecht. Recording, try-outs and release of the new CD Nightshift Thunder: A new directions in the trio line-up, playing their own original compositions.
Dutch media about Nightshift Thunder:

"... it’s good to notice they compose from the same point of view as their former repertoire. Most of the tracks feel like a song ... though it’s not really pop music …especially the guitars “edge” reveals the pop music background. This trio presents it’s own music in a personal way ... the New Standard Trio presents their music in a wide range of emotions: solid and rough ... vulnerable and almost silence ... the soloing is to the point." (Herman te Loo, www.jazzflits.nl)

"This is better than Footsteps … the musical interactions are beautiful and intense ... sometimes you hear guitar fusion a la John Scofield ... straight ahead jazz with acoustic guitar and several modest ballads. It’s pretty and fresh …." (Rita Jager, www.planet.nl (jazz up)

“First it starts with fat rock in jazz music featuring guitarist Folker Tettero. After leaving “ the pop scene” the double bass comes out. Hence “The Seed Crystal”: It’s much more sensitive. Due to the beautiful sound of the acoustic bass, the acoustic guitar sounds warm and almost classic. Travelling through many styles it ends with “Solace for my Friend” in almost silence, a very special ending. A one of kind experience.” (Jan Klupper, www.muziekpodia.nl)

“The limitations of this small line-up is treated magnificently, by use of overdubbed guitars and a prominent role for the bassist. It’s hard to give this music a nametag. It’s definitely Jazz, but you also hear Pop, Rock and Latin American influences, in different moods. The music is accessible with a preference for the melodic vs. the complicated and the polished vs. the raw …” (Henk Aalbers, De Gelderlander)
