Album Notes
At the forefront of the new generation of dance bands, Night Watch performs for contra and English country dances and concerts throughout the U.S., seamlessly meshing their northern and southern musical roots. On fiddle, Naomi Morse finds sounds both fiery and flowing, and her rhythmic Vermont style sparks with French Canadian, Irish and Swedish influences. Owen Morrison, hailing from Nashville, contributes rock solid rhythm guitar interspersed with facile improvisatory lead guitar and mandolin. Elvie Miller, a New Hampshire native, grounds the band with groovy piano accompaniment and accordion leads that leave dancers screaming for more.

Their debut album, entitled "Splendid Isolation," has been a long time in the making. The three musicians in Night Watch are childhood friends who developed a dynamic musical chemistry playing together as teenagers at Pinewoods Camp. Over the years that followed, the trio repeatedly found a way to make music together despite geographical distance and busy schedules--ever eager to continue the musical conversation.

Beyond the early classical training and deep traditional music roots they all share, each member of Night Watch brings unique musical depth to the band: Elvie spent a year as a Watson fellow dedicating herself to the accordion and the musics of northern Europe; Naomi has immersed herself in a myriad of vocal styles from eastern European music with Northern Harmony to renaissance singing with the ensemble Uncloistered; Owen received a performance degree from Guilford College where he studied classical guitar, flamenco and jazz.

For the last several years, Night Watch has brought their music to dance floors from Washington state to Washington DC. Splendid Isolation, with its combination of original and traditional tunes, brings their colorful performances to life in a way that lasts beyond the fleeting joy of a dance or concert hall.

Splendid Isolation
This album is quite unlike what I normally listen to. The combination of instruments is all about contributing to the whole sound with little "now it's my turn for a solo". And the whole sound is joyous, quiet or sad often with hint of connecting to songs of our ancestors. As the last piece is written for my mother, I was bowled over.
