Backed by the swirling acoustics of strings: santoor, kora, chapman stick and guitar, as well as drone-inspired electronics, Nila’s soaring vocals encompass a range of influences from Arabic folk and jazz to classical Indian music. Simply mesmerizing.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
\"Nila\'s fluid voice and compositional ambition absorb myriad influences from Arabic folk and jazz traditions to contemporary chill out and Indian classical flavours. Always surprising and restless by nature, Nila\'s work is endlessly inventive and can shift seamlessly between genres and cultural traditions with an individuality devoid of fear or contrivance. \"Wandering leaf\" is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell or Led Zeppelin where the title track \"Unattached To Desire\" is forged from the technical drive of a fledgling Shakti. Through a voice overflowing with nimble agility, wistful innocence and grace, Nila\'s debut weaves a very appealing spell - inspired.\" NITIN SAWHNEY

“Breathy and brilliant, backed by swirling acoustic guitars and propelled by her English / Indian roots and a wild obsession with Arabic music, Nila is an incredible talent.” GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL 2008

Nila Raja’s debut EP, Unattached To Desire is a beautiful, seductive exploration of desire, passion, gratification and raw beauty, covering themes of freedom, spirituality and love.

Recorded in a SE London basement, Unattached to Desire evokes the spine-chilling atmosphere and harmonics of a derelict church. Nila’s intriguing use of strings is mesmerizing, combining piano, santoor (Iran), guitar, kora (West Africa) and chapman stick (Los Angeles) in a distinctive, beguiling blend. Nila\'s soothing and stirring vocals weave in and out of these magical soundscapes.

At just 22 Goldsmiths’ graduate, Nila is an Emerging Artist in Residence at Southbank Centre, London and has worked with Nitin Sawhney, Mad Professor, Max Moya (Ojos de Brujo) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) as well as singing as a soloist with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. As a classically trained musician and singer, Nila’s performed in an impressive array of established venues including Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Halls, Millennium Dome, Bridgewater Hall, Cargo, 93 Feet East, Brighton’s answer to SWSW Great Escape (2008). She has also performed on BBC Songs of Praise, BBC Radio 4 and the BBC Asian Network Radio on the Nikki Bedi show.

Nila’s inspirations and influences include Natacha Atlas, Imogen Heap, Anoushka Shankar, Ojos De Brujo, Joni Mitchell, and Nitin Sawhney amongst others.
