Through the Matter

by Niya

Rock and Roll from the Heart. Niya writes songs that are beautiful, soulful slap in the face. A 12 page booklet with lyrics and photos that tell the story of a lifetime of music. Looks like a CD. Sounds and feels like an album.

Album Notes
Niya grew up in a city called Chalmette just east of New Orleans. She has been singing since she was five, starting in the church choir, then school plays, and finally in a Rock band known as "The Sheltered." She started singing in the clubs around New Orleans when she was 15; luckily she looked old enough and club owners back then were lax. Niya was voted one of the "Women in Rock" in the local New Orleans paper while still just a Catholic high school girl by day and a "Rock Star" by night.
From these gigs, she earned the money for her first guitar (a Fender electric), and with it started to play and write. She would spend years in many bands, writing and honing her craft. Just before the Hurricane hit, a record company took interest in her jazz band, "Niya and the Satellites" and requested some recordings. Unfortunately,  she was not signed. The dream of taking care of her family with the money from the record deal was shattered, and so was her resolve.
The band dispersed and she started writing her first solo Rock/Soul album while her then boyfriend, Kris Nickeson, built a music studio in their home. It took 6 years for the construction to be complete. When it was done, Kris and Niya were married in the beautiful Colorado Mountains. Niya put together a new band of players and simply named the band Niya. The night before the studio opening and the beginning of the album recording, Niya was in a debilitating hit-and-run car accident which halted everything. It took eight months for her to be able to play guitar again and work further on the dream of having her first solo album, and two more years for the project to finally be complete.
This album is a true labor of love and a true testament to the power of a dream and how it can keep you going even when it seems that time has stopped and the dream has died. Please give a listen and take home the heart of a fighter and a true believer in dreams coming true.
