Album Notes
Beginnings are important, and this feels to me like an important beginning. North Country Blue, the debut recording by an exciting young band of the same name, presents to the world the start of a musical journey. It’s an assured, confident and very accomplished first step and a heartening dispatch from the next generation of bluegrass.
Given the ages of the members of North Country Blue—two of them are 15 and two are 14—one might expect North Country Blue to be a typical “youth band” CD. But this recording transcends the limitations implied by that label in several significant ways. These are serious, hard-working musicians with an intense, sharp edge to their music. Their original material (two songs and two tunes on this CD) helps set them apart, as do challenging covers from such writers as Hazel Dickens, Gillian Welch and Anais Mitchell. All four band members sing both lead and harmony vocals, and tight trio harmonies are a point of pride.
These young women learned bluegrass in the traditional fashion, within a family setting. Tessa and Daisy have both played in family bands with parents and siblings, while Megan and Ida have bluegrass-playing parents. They met at bluegrass festivals and grew up together in the California Bluegrass Association and its highly regarded youth programs.
Formed late in 2017, North Country Blue has performed already at several major music events, including the Strawberry Music Festival, the California Bluegrass Association’s Father’s Day Festival, Viva Las VeGrass in Las Vegas and the International Bluegrass Music Association’s annual convention in Raleigh, North Carolina.
North Country Blue has electrified audiences throughout California and now has the chance to share its magic with the wider world. Producer Sharon Gilchrist did a tremendous job of helping the band reach its potential in the studio and fashion a perfect introduction to its fresh new-old sound. Bluegrass fans always seem to worry about the future of the music, but as long as bands like North Country Blue make CDs like this one, I think we’ll be just fine.
