If Ensiferum, Amon Amarth and Wintersun mutated into a more raw sound it would culminate into something like this.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The album is actually a concept album about a fantasy story I made up in order to have enough content for the lyrics. The album order was compromised in order to capture more listeners past the first one or two songs. The actual order of the story is:

Written in the Stars
A Soldier’s Song
Magic Mead
Black Forest Rain
Wanderer
North Hammer
Tip of the Spear
Avatar
Spellbinder
Lion’s Winter

Written in the Stars is a song that foreshadows the whole plot, as it were. The chosen champion and his origins, the danger that lurks in the shadows and the oncoming peril that threatens the world. The song also foreshadows his ascent into godliness once his task is achieved.

A Soldier’s Song is the first time we meet the hero. He left his country to fight for a militia that has been hired to rid a foreign land of a tyrant king. It’s a fight song that embodies the ideals of the hero, which is that Valhalla awaits those earn their glory on the battlefield and that he believes he fights with the gods by his side.

Magic Mead takes us to the lodgings of the hero as he celebrates a glorious victory with his fellow brother’s in arms over a distant tyrant king. As the militia feast and drink to their new found glory, a strange and fantastical looking woman catches his attention away from the camp. The magic mead part of it is contributed to his magical encounter with this woman as he follows her further into the night. Hallucinations start to happen and he eventually loses control of himself and passes out. This is the reason I chose to put the more blasty and dark ending to the song.

Black Forest Rain is a dream sequence in which he has lucid visions of home and the all-father Odin. At this point, he learns of the journey that awaits him. The song ends on a major note as it is a realization of his destiny.

Wanderer is a song where he takes to the high seas to seek his destiny. Dromond itself is a word for a large warship that is rowed in medieval times. Although clear depictions of places he doesn’t really comprehend what his purpose is at this point. And thus, he lies awake endlessly trying to piece the puzzle together. Without a real steadfast idea of where he is going, he navigates by the star’s using his memories from the vision.

North Hammer an ancient relic given to the hero by the gods, or rather directed to. Like Thor and Mjolnir the might weapon ‘North Hammer’ is to be key to the successful fulfilment of the hero’s destiny. The song also touches on his finding of the North Hammer at the bottom of a frozen lake, battling the frigid waters that kept it hidden for so many centuries.

Tip of the Spear is a fight song as well. The hero heads to a mountain peak rumoured to house an ancient celestial that can provide him with godlike powers that can help him defeat the bestial horde. However, a camp of these foul beasts lay in his path. The hero and his brother’s in arms lead their cavalry to a surprise attack in order to eradicate the menace.

Avatar - a manifestation of a deity or released soul in bodily form on earth; an incarnate divine teacher. This is the definition that I thought fit well for this song. This song is about battling the elements of scaling a giant mountain during blizzards and furious winds. The Teacher and deity aspect of the hero shines through as he preserves and inspires other beyond their capacity.

Spellbinder is a song where he meets the celestial. The song mostly contains descriptors of this divine being rather than the act of acquiring these powers or runes, although it is alluded to in a few lines.

Lion’s Winter would be the final battle. The lion is symbolic of many heroic characteristics that attach to the hero himself, although as I indicated elsewhere, the original name came from Granville island’s Winter Ale and just sort of stuck. With his new found power he extinguishes the danger from the land and the last bit including the fade out indicate his ascent into godliness as he sprouts divine Valkyrie-like wings and lifts towards Valhalla to take his place at Odin’s table with the other gods.
