ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Novel Jazz Septet is a band with a mission: to proselytize about the vast Duke Ellington‐Billy Strayhorn canon. According to trombonist band leader Barney Balch, "About 2% of their 3000 total compositions would classify as "well‐known", 98% lesser‐to poorly‐known.“ The CD before you is the group's latest labor of love. It is a roughly even mix of the 2% and the 98%, all given the TLC and novel touch whence the 'Tet derives its name. While some of the titles here may seem like Ellington-Strayhorn anthems, just listen to what Novel does to breathe new life into them. Other tunes may not be as familiar, but Barney—like the kid in the candy store whenever he visits the Smithsonian—has carefully culled them from that institution's lode of original E&S scores. Listening to the Novel Jazz Septet's loving treatment of these treasures, you can’t help but wonder why these Maine gems are one of New England’s best‐kept musical secrets.
Keep up the good work, Novel!

Rich Tozier, host of JAZZ TONIGHT on Maine Public Radio
