ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
MARK R. BALDRIDGE has created the ensemble NUANCE CRUSADERS as a vehicle to realize his compositions, which are a unique fusion of jazz with numerous other influences ranging from pop to World music.
Mark is a life-long resident of the Chicago area, starting with his 6th grade concert band. His cousin Jim Nyeholt, a member of 60’s rock band Aorta, was Mark’s inspiration to pursue a career in music.
From 1977 to 1985 Mark attended the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, where he studied percussion under legendary educator James Dutton. From 1977 to 1985 Mark attended the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, where he studied percussion under legendary educator James Dutton. He has also taken courses in jazz improvisation with famed Chicago jazz musicians Willie Pickens and Frank Dawson; jazz and classical harmony; and classical and jazz piano. He also performed in the schools’ Percussion Ensemble. Between 1977 and 1980 he attended the Birch Creek Music Performance Center, under James Dutton’s direction, and began composing original music.
In 2012 Mark studied jazz composition with saxophonists Mark O’Connor and Christopher Madsen, and in 2013 he started working with bassist/composer Steven Hashimoto, refining and arranging his growing body of compositions. In 2016, with Hashimoto co-producing, he released his first CD of original works, “Beginnings.” This was also the début of his project/group The Nuance Crusaders, a floating ensemble to realize his compositions consisting of some of the finest players in Chicago, including Michael Levin, Leandro Lopez-Varady, Heath Chappell, Neal Alger, Diane Delin, Barry Winograd, Steve Koerner, Amy Yassinger and Darryl Boggs. A second CD is being produced now. As part of this new project, Mark contracted noted arranger Clark Gault, who has produced work for clients including NBC, the San Diego Light Opera, Sanyo and Coca Cola, among many others, to write large-ensemble orchestrations.
Mark’s mission is to revitalize and bring new audiences to the scene by approaching jazz with a new approach that incorporates the jazz tradition as well as various other genres of music.
