Album Notes
NYMPHYA is a Folktronica Art-Pop artist with suffusions of Worldbeat, Opera and Avant-garde, where St. Vincent meets Kate Bush at the Otherworld sorcereress’ soiree. Her alchemical Art-Pop style is a quirky collage of eclectic beats, soaring vocals, haunting soundscapes, and captivating samples which kindle her insightful lyrics.

Professional opera singer Valentina O is the eclectic and multifaceted songwriter, vocalist, arranger, and producer behind Nymphya. After a personal tragedy in 2006 when her fiancé, record producer Keith Keller, suddenly died, Valentina struggled to bring herself back to life from her crippling grief through music and spiritual practice. Using what Keith taught her, Valentina built her own recording studio in 2011 and began producing and recording her own music.

Up to then, Valentina had appeared throughout the United States as an opera singer, actor and performer, as well as on numerous soundtracks for television, film, and on multiple CD projects for recording artists, including backing up John Cale (The Velvet Underground) on the Tonight Show and appearing on MTV. Valentina also opened for Todd Rundgren at the Fillmore in San Francisco and for George Benson at Villa Montalvo, as well as Dana Carvey at the Shoreline Ampitheatre.
By 2011, Valentina had performed her original song “Peace on Earth” onstage at the Seattle Center for a live, global webcast which remained in rotation on PeaceDayTV.

As a songwriter and producer, Nymphya constructs her Folktronica Art-Pop music in a collage of diverse beats against arching vocals that are juxtaposed with soundscapes and unusual instrumentations, some acoustic, some electronic. “I like to bring the extraordinary to the ordinary, and familiarity to the unfamiliar,” she says. Nymphya programs all of the music and plays all of the instruments on Dream Dance, aside from Ray Schaeffer’s bass guitar, and some guest appearances by other musicians, including roots singer-songwriter Gentry Bronson on piano and toy piano.

Dream Dance is a concept CD, opening with the soundscape of peaceful strings and footsteps crunching through a forest glade, before catapulting into the joyous and soaring EDM / operatic “Over the Hedge”. Moving through discovery, despair, and ultimately hopeful redemption, the work is an unwitting document of Nymphya’s rise from the ashes from her life-changing grief, which catalyzed Nymphya’s transformation back from opera singer to the recording artist she had set out to be from the start.

In August of 2015, one of Nymphya’s new songs, “Dream Dance” , was recently featured as a soundtrack for the Extreme Surfing viral video, garnering over 874,000 listens and views, and continuing to climb.

As the award-winning creative director and arranger of the San Francisco-based acapella cabaret group Screaming Divas in the late ’90s, Valentina won vocal arrangement awards and top honors in the Beyond Category for the SF Weekly in San Francisco. She then developed an obtuse love for opera and launched her professional opera career, which brought her to the concert halls of the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and New York City Opera, among others.

Reviews in the press characterized Valentina’s singing as “stunning, provocative and consistently beautiful” . . . “golden mezzo”. . . “gorgeous voice and impressive acting” . . . “brilliance and emotional power”. . . and by 2015, Valentina was commissioned to co-write and musically arrange a cabaret musical based on the life of Edith Piaf, which garnered rave reviews, sell out houses, extended runs, and a nomination for Best Original Script from the SF Bay Area Theater Critics Circle.

All of these influences feed her original compositions and arrangements for Nymphya. The eponymous “Dream Dance” track, is a Dead Can Dance-like hypnotic track which engages Bodhran drums and chamber strings with Eastern European vocal yelps and operatic high notes. To visually capture the ancestral feeling of the track, Nymphya shot the “Dream Dance” music video at ancient sacred sites and standing stones throughout Ireland, including the monastic island Skellig Michael, with scenery so dramatic and breathtaking, Star Wars fans will recognize it as the same location The Force Awakens used for its surprising cameo of the aging Luke Skywalker.

Since each song on Dream Dance contributes to the unfolding story, as you listen, the CD becomes an experience that stays with you, rather than just a collection of recorded songs.
