Album Notes
Guitarist and composer Oleg Pissarenko, the Musician of the Year 2013 as voted by the Estonian Public Broadcasting, presents his band’s current CD “Who Are You” – a collection of six instrumental pieces that create a distinct little soundworld complete with its own aesthetics, colours and musical magic.

With a line-up that has remained unchanged for 10 years now, the Oleg Pissarenko Band has released 4 albums: “The Book’s Burning” (featuring guest vocalist Hedvig Hanson and saxophonist Deniss Pashkevich), “Colours of Light” (a collaboration with singer Tõnis Mägi), “Free Child World” (live), and “Who Are You”.

According to Pissarenko, his music is minimalist in nature and it does draw on the tradition of jazz, but at the same time he tries to steer clear of prejudices and preconceptions, and he doesn’t feel obliged to prove anything to anyone. Certainly, to call Pissarenko’s music jazz, at least in the classical sense, is not quite right. At the core of his soundworld there are also elements of 1970s instrumental rock and post-punk, and traces of profound meditation. The harmonious flow of music can suddenly give way to gripping grooves and energetic outbursts – to return, eventually, to its thoughtful beginnings again. The restraint in the manner the sounds are used, however, does not rule out vivid emotions and expressiveness – this music reaches straight for the listener’s heart.
The music of the Oleg Pissarenko Band has been described as “a joy bursting slowly into bloom”, “light-nirvana”, “transparent jazz” and “something bigger than just music”.
