ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
With memorable melodies, and colorful interplay, American Composer Oliver Caplan’s debut album Illuminations shines with deep, resonant romanticism. A heartfelt reflection on beauty and growth, Illuminations calls audiences to experience the intricacies of imagination and metamorphosis.

Highlights include dreamy chamber music inspired by lazy summer days (“My Elephant Cloud”); an elegiac tale of memory and loss (“Is There a Word That Means Return”); a cinematic orchestral piece inspired by Chinese folklore (“Journey to the West”); and the enigmatic title track, “Illuminated by the Light of Two Ships Passing in the Night.” From solo piano to 50-piece orchestra, these works showcase the versatility and creativity of a young composer.

Simply Beautiful
Oliver Caplan's music always tells a story that comes from the heart. This music will transport you from a mystical moonlit ocean to a warm new England summer day to a simply thrilling odyssey through China. The quality of the recording is exceptional, and it demands repeated listening. A wonderful debut alum from a young composer.
