ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Channelling the raw emotion of the 1960’s song stylists, Olivia Pipitone delivers a powerful expression of strength, sass, passion and lyrical tenderness with her debut album ‘Dirt Drenched Soul’.

The album was recorded live in analogue with a hand picked band of leading jazz and blues musicians from Sydney, Australia, who are guitarist Aaron Flower (National Jazz Award Winner 2007), pianist/organist Jerry Craib, bassist James Haselwood and drummer Cameron Reid.

It features a gutsy selection of tunes spanning jazz, blues, soul and even country, from the rare soul of A Love That Never Grows Cold to much-loved jazz standard St Louis Blues to a country-tinged version of Bob Dylan’s Simple Twist of Fate, together with the classic soul of Ray Charles’ Drown In My Own Tears and Donny Hathaway’s I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know, and a sassy cover of Nina Simone’s roadhouse blues Buck.

Olivia harnesses the songs for her own needs. With her big, heart-soaked voice and the palpable personality and commitment of her band, each song is transformed and the result is an album of pure soul music.

“Olivia Pipitone sings with a rare authenticity,” said leading jazz composer and bass player Steve Hunter.

Olivia sung in choirs as a child but spent her early adult life struggling against a desire to sing. At age 30, she lost the fight and walked into a jam session at the Empire Hotel in Sydney’s inner west.

From the moment she stepped inside, she felt at home. The audience felt it too and within months she was regularly playing gigs and had recorded her first demo.

Since then, Olivia has sung with musicians she could once only admire from afar such as Clayton Doley, Adam Pringle, Aaron Flower and Continental Robert Susz, performing in venues such as the Macquarie Hotel, the Woollahra Hotel, the Rose of Australia, the AB Hotel in Glebe and the Botany View Hotel, Newtown.

Olivia’s debut album, Dirt Drenched Soul, was launched at the Sound Lounge on 18 February 2010.
