Album Notes
Thy Holy Presence offers listening pleasure for every season of the church year, from Advent through Christmas, Holy Week and Easter! It contains favorite a cappella anthems and motets but also features oboe, flute, clarinet, strings, drums, piccolo, in addition to our Allen organ which has both pipes and digital stops. You will also hear a wonderful soprano soloist, Olivia Leskowicz!

The title Thy Holy Presence was inspired by the Tschesnokov anthem “Let Thy Holy Presence" and our awareness of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and in our hearts as we offer Him adoration and praise. Selections include famous choral pieces like Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus”, Duruflé’s “Ubi Caritas”, and Stainer’s “God So Loved the World”. For Christmas, there are familiar songs in unusual arrangements -- “Silent Night” -- and lesser known carols -- “As Lately We Watched." Music for Lent and Easter like “Ah, Holy Jesus” and “Cantate Domino” will keep you listening when Christmas is over. Album artwork features the sculpture of Mary and baby Jesus which was created for our first church building in State College, PA, founded in 1908.

We call ourselves "The Little Choir That Could!" Today's OLV Sanctuary Choir had just 11 members in 1998, when Dr. Sara Hopkins became Director of Music at Our Lady of Victory. During the seventies and eighties, the musical way had been well prepared by Gary Penkala who kept the classical tradition alive through the Vatican II liturgical changes. His choir made several pilgrimages to Italy and Germany. We have come a long way since 1998 and now have 25-40 members, depending on the season and the number of singers who join us for our Christmas Midnight Mass and for Holy Week. We have only one professional singer (our soprano soloist Olivia) and our membership is not by audition but is open to anyone who is willing to work and to learn. We sing for masses from September through May. While the primary style of the Sanctuary Choir is classical, the choir enjoys singing contemporary music, early American music, chant, and African-American spirituals. Our choir members range in age from fifteen to ninety but differences in age and experience melt away as we work together to praise God in song and support the parish in prayer.

Proceeds from this album will be used to help our choir members participate in a pilgrimage to Rome in December 2012, where they will sing a concert at the Church of Saint Ignatius as well as a Papal Mass at St. Peter's and a Papal audience with Pope Benedict XVI. For many of our members, this will be a first and only opportunity to visit Rome and to meet the Pope - we are very excited!

A spirit of peace and worship
I have very much enjoyed the music of Our Lady of Victory's Sanctuary Choir as found on their CD release "Thy Holy Presence." Beautiful arrangements of traditional choral music and orchestral instruments. Highly recommended.
