Album Notes
"Majors & Minors" is the second release from On These Airwaves (sometimes referred to as OTA) from Myrtle Beach, SC... If their first release "Sunset Provisions" was considered to be light and spacious, the new record takes on a decidedly harsher and darker mood. The alternate title to "Majors & Minors" is "War & Love &..." The music speaks of the realities of our current world, from the fog of war to the uniqueness of strange love... This record, much like the first, is a musical journey. It is best listened to in it's entirety... from beginning to end without interruption. Headphones are encouraged. Interestingly every song, like the album's name, has an alternate title. The first, "Angel Feathers" (or, "Just Her Nature") begins with an old scratchy LP sound and quickly morphs into stereo deluxe guitar. The song ends with what sounds like a broken compact disc before running headlong into the initial strains of "Toes In the Shadows" ("Bright Black"). This tune features an orchestral arraingement punctuated by a tremolo guitar in the chorus. "US" ("Aren't We Special") follows with a synth bass undercutting the phrase "we got bombs, we got bullets, we got bad!" and which concludes with a Heroshima blast. Acoustic guitar and children's voices permeate "In This Moment"("A Chance Meeting") which explores the unfortunate modern day phenomenon of suicide bombers. Fittingly, the instrumental "Here's Johnny" ("WAR!!!") is next with it's backward guitar, haunting slide, and smashing drums. The ambient "The Fog Of War"("Hard Nail Boots") creates a dream mood of confusion. Just in time comes a song of hope: "Perfect Circle"("A World Better"). It begins strangely with a distorted hard to comprehend spoken vocal before breaking into a lush beautiful chorus ladden with silky strings...hard not to sing along. The NAVY S.E.A.L.S get top billing on "Break Me"("Leathal Domination") with it's strait forward guitar rock sound and message "I won't talk, I won't sing, I won't utter a single thing..." Pulling at the heartstings with a Pink Floyd vocal is "Homecoming"("Will You Still Love Me Tonight?"). How would you feel if your best friend were dying? A different kind of love is the theme for "Bi Polar" ("Testing 1,2,3"). Call in Dr Strange Love and mix in a Radiohead vibe and you might understand. "Sum Of Parts" and it's clever other title "Multiply and Divide" looks unflatteringly at a family and it's dysfunctions. The lengthy ending featuring orchestral layering and the phrase "I need you to hold me..." begs to be sung time and again. So, heavy themes of war and love and yet a delicate ending. "Gone But Not Forgotten"("Down But Not Out") completes the journey with just two gentle guitars.... smiling.
