ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
''Soul-Man'' is my most personal musical project. With this EP, I wanted to share some of my life experience, with hopes it will be useful to others: Transcend is a song I wrote after being told I needed to stop being my authentic self in public and with the media, in order to be more successful as a musician, among other things. I made a decision to go beyond the limitations others attempted to place on me; I kept being me, and I kept singing from my truth, my heart, my soul.
Then I wrote Stunt Kween, a song which touches on some of my experiences after coming out and hitting the club scene hard during that period. I met some ''Stunt Kweens'' out there and quickly learned that 'Stunting' was not only a cultural slang, it was a lifestyle, for some.
Finally, I chose to cover Sam Cooke's legendary Civil Rights Anthem not only because of its relevance to what's happening today as unarmed black men are gunned down daily, but also because it sums of my experience with losing my mother in my teens-- the pain and tribulation that came with that. I have always had a strong connection with A Change Is Gonna Come-- As I sing the hook, I'm concentrated on the meditative hope that carried me through the premature loss of my mother, growing up under strict religious constraints, immense judgment and all the things that transpired as a result. I wanted my cover to pay homage to the original artist by recording the song in the way it was originally written, on Sam Cooke's guitar.
These recordings are me being honest about my life with the knowledge that many will relate and hopefully be empowered, inspired and entertained; Soul-Man is a triumph listening experience and a look into my own life, thoughts, feelings and experiences.

Engineer Paul Voran at Imurj Raleigh captured my vocal impeccably. Brennan Clark supports me appropriately on acoustic guitar. I'm proud to have executive produced something for the people; a contribution to the arts. I hope people can find a piece of themselves in my music.

Special shout out to my musical hero, the incomparable Whitney Houston. You inspire me to sing with every fiber of my being. I will always, always love you!

Be inspired!
