ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
From the Composer - John Harmon: I have always been interested in “First American” culture, as evidenced by numerous published tittles: Seven Arrows, Prayer of the Bison, and The Sacred Circle, to name a few. By many oral accounts, Crazy Horse’s deeds were the stuff of legend! The more I examined his life, the more inspired and committed I became to composing this piece. Designed to tell the story of Crazy Horse, each of the four movements reflects a significant phase of his life-journey. My own personal journey during the process of composing Crazy Horse has left me deeply humbled, coupled with profound admiration for this reluctant hero and his people.

The Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1941 and has become an integral part of the cultural life of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Many gifted soloists, composers and conductors (both local and world-renowned) have shared the stage with OSO. The orchestra has a proud heritage of ground-breaking artstic endeavors, including world-premiere performances and recordings of commissioned works by Virgil Thomson and Lukas Foss. All musicians, conductors and guest artists that have contributed to the 75 years of the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra have shared the vision of engaging and educating the community, building community through music, and enriching lives.

Under the baton of music director, Maestro Daniel Black, the orchestra celebrates its Diamond Jubilee anniversary season with American composer John Harmon’s epic masterpiece, Crazy Horse. Recorded live at the historic Grand Opera House in Oshkosh, WI, the Midwest premiere of Harmon’s remarkable piece is destined to become part of America’s great music history.
