I Tried to Love You

by Paige Powell

So much like Joni Mitchell’s style when she was in her early Jazz period, this song explains “I guess love is rare” and asks, “Is love ever fair?”

Album Notes
Each of the 3 verses portrays a different love interest (there’s Randy, Robert and Michael) and each guy has very desireable qualities, but the singer sees “ice in my veins” and “no sparks in the air”. On the bridge of the song, the singer laments that she’s “been in love before, and cried — I wasn’t the one who walked away… like sand in my hand, love wouldn’t stay.” This Joni Mitchell-influenced song also employs an acoustic guitar Bb tuning which is Joni’s as well. Paige recorded an instrumental version of this song on the Wolfe and Powell CD, “Cappuccino Music”.
