Album Notes
“Brennan has released Moonglow, a collection of eleven jazz standards from the Great American Songbook that find Brennan’s clever phrasing and spot-on technicality conveying all the romance and dreams the music has to offer. This is creatively crafty standards done with style and passion.”
Steph Cosme, Staccato
“Vocalist Pam Brennan has created a sparkling Great American Songbook album entitled Moonglow. Brimming with some of the most well-known standards, she executes them with a laidback approach that sings with beauty. Brennan has a matter of fact, savoir faire about her approach. Her vocal style is infectious and engaging.”
“What is most striking about Brennan’s voice is not the acrobatics that is heard on so many albums these days; but the respectful refinement and the excitement and joy you can hear in her voice singing these tunes. You can tell she thoroughly enjoys the standards, which was very appealing to me. Not just another vocalist interpreting the standards as a vanity project, Brennan was like a well fitted glove of yesteryear and her band of compadres fit the mood quite nicely.”
Jeff Becker, Jazz Sensibilities
“Brennan has an easy-going style; her voice is calming and has a soothing sparkle about it. “Old Devil Moon,” is a perfect vehicle that exhibits her approach. Taken at a much slower pace then usual it focuses on the breezy side of her delivery. The ensemble creates a glorious soundscape of Latin tinged rhythms, with restrained mastery. With a change up in the B-section of straight-ahead swing the arrangement works, and Brennan shimmers. Brennan is a new name to me, but one I will continue to watch for, her style is honest and easy on the ears, and her respect for the standards is clearly evident. Accompanied by an outstanding ensemble, and in particular the sensitivity of Ron Affif, who can be found on several albums we have reviewed over the years, he continues to prove he is a go to guitarist for vocalists and serves them well. I look forward to hearing more from Pam Brennan, a fresh voice in the Great American Songbook fabric.”
