ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Celebrating the often forgotten women songwriters of the Classic Jazz and Blues era, author/vocalist Pamela Rose chronicles the determined, creative women who wrote some of our most beloved music from the Great American Songbook. Based on Rose's critically acclaimed multi-media concert of the same name, "Wild Women of Song" contains over 100 photo archives, sumptuous color layout and rich biographical detail. This 80 page book comes with a bonus re-mastered audio CD in which Rose brings to life 12 songs by Peggy Lee, Doris Fisher, Dorothy Fields, Alberta Hunter, Bernice Petkere and more. Each chapter includes a convenient song list, suggested listening guide, and bibliography. A wonderful gift set for lovers of the Golden Age of American Music.

"Pamela Rose takes Jazz to historic heights with Wild Women of Song...it's a swinging honors course in womankind!" --Bruce Kelly, Editor-in-Chief, San Francisco Magazine

“A fun, surprising and important celebration of Jazz Women by an artist of passion and talent herself! It’s about time..in fact, overtime..that these remarkable stories were told..Pamela Rose makes their amazing stories swing!” JAN WAHL, KCBS RADIO/KRON TV, SAN FRANCISCO

In 2009 Pamela Rose recorded Wild Women of Song: Great Gal Composers of the Jazz Era (her fifth CD) with multiple Grammy award winner Leslie Ann Jones as producer and engineer. This highly regarded work sparked an entirely new chapter in Rose's career, as she researched and mounted a touring multi-media theatrical concert in London, Los Angeles and New York and the Bay Area. Rose combined elements of storytelling, archival photos and a live jazz performance to bring the tales of these fascinating, forgotten songwriters back to life. The show elicited a keen response from audiences and jazz enthusiasts, inspiring Rose to broaden her research and seek out rare photos to include in her first book, Wild Women of Song. " I love getting a chance to not only honor these women , Rose remarks, "but also to remind audiences of this vibrant era in American Music." Rose is on the faculty of the Jazz School in Berkeley, and continues to sing jazz and blues in clubs and festivals everywhere.

"Heartfelt, Female-centric Jazz Anthropology!" --Harvey Siders, Jazz Times

Just For a Thrill
You will want to buy one for yourself and one for your best friend, some of your other friends, maybe even one for your next door neighbor. This is not only a luscious 12-song CD full of dynamite jazz and blues tracks, all composed by women -- but it is wrapped up in a fascinating book of these composers' unusual and dramatic life stories, illustrated with expressive, historic photographs. This is the real deal!

You Could Have It All
I didn't think the 2009 Wild Women of Song CD could be improved upon, but Pamela Rose proved me wrong! This collection of stories and photos about the women composers of Tin Pan Alley is part homage, part history lesson, and always fascinating. Play the companion CD while paging through the book, and it's almost like having Pamela perform her multi-media show in your living room. Pamela Rose shares the backstory to familiar songs, the heartache and triumph, the love and the loss. This is the perfect gift for any jazz lover or historian - just don't forget to pick up a copy for yourself.

CD and Book? Wow!!
I wrote the following review for the CD alone when it was released:

"Every jazz fan with the slightest interest in vocal music needs this CD. History lesson? Yes, and more. Project created out of love and admiration? Yes, and again more. Great musicians with great arrangements coming together with a great vocalist? Yes, and still more. Wild Women of Song is truly a celebration of the music these women composers have given to us, and that includes Pamela Rose herself. The songs you already know are suddenly fresh and alive again. The ones you don't know will have you wondering where these gems were hidden. And the three original numbers, cool and contemporary, fit superbly with the others. But most of all, what really makes this CD special, is Pamela Rose's incredible vocal style: crisp and clear, sweet and saucy. What a talent!"

Having seen the live multimedia perform the companion book was, to my thinking, a logical next step. The extensive research that went into this project had to be presented alongside the music. As a package this is truly something wonderful. An incredible gift.
