Album Notes
Vazquez’ music orbits around harmonic, melodic, and rhythmical concepts from the Greater Antilles blended with modern American Jazz progressions. The Mighty Pirates Troubadours’ sound is unique and well worth the listener’s attention.

Vazquez, who along with his Mighty Pirates Troubadours received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album, Marooned, in 2008, was born in Philadelphia, PA. Vazquez’ recording catalogue, which spans 30 years, includes such rhythmic concepts as Bomba Jazz, Bomba Sicá Jazz, Plena Jazz, Jibaro Jazz, and Plena Pirata Jazz. Papo Vazquez is considered by many to be the progenitor of the style of music he presents on Spirit Warrior.

Spirit Warrior includes tracks such as Huracán, a jazz tune, which utilizes the Puerto Rican Plena rhythm as its driving force. Santo Angel, which is dedicated to Venezuela, includes, invited guests, Venezuelan percussionist Roberto Quintero, and the renowned Cuban flautist, Orlando “Maraca” Valle. A poignant requiem for pianist, Hilton Ruiz, No Goodbyes for You, is included. El Morro, which utilizes the Bomba Sicá rhythm as its driving force, is dedicated to the Castillo San Felipe, in San Juan, PR. The Aguinaldo Fajardeño, Despedida, which is authentic and deep-rooted in Puerto Rican tradition, signals the end of this intense musical voyage with Papo Vazquez and the Mighty Pirates Troubadours.

Vazquez, who has performed with the Tito Puente Orchestra, the Ray Charles Orchestra, Ray Barretto, Bobby Valentin, Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon, Ruben Blades, Dizzy Gillespie and his United Nations Orchestra, Slide Hampton, Chico O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, and who was a founding member of Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band, Conjunto Libre, and Batacumbele, is now steering his own musical ship along with his band mates, the Mighty Pirates Troubadours, and Spirit Warrior, his latest musical offering, is sure to quench your musical thirst.
