Introduction

It is such an honor for me to present Pat Cleveland whose cache and ‎status is nothing less than American fashion royalty; and she embodies the spirit of Joséphine and I knew ‘Tonight Joséphine’ would be a great song for her. I have had a lifetime love affair with the Baker mystique and I wanted to write a song that would captures that mystique. Joséphine still clearly reigns supreme as the first black international superstar. Cleveland stated “I have so many fans worldwide that have been waiting for this tribute to Josephine Baker”and now everyone Ms. Pat Cleveland............. Producer Maurice Lynch

Ms.Cleveland’s Biography

Patricia Cleveland started her career at 14 with the Ebony Fashion Show. Pat's photographs have graced countless pages of Ebony and Johnson Publications through the decades. The legendary supermodel moved to Europe in the early 70's and took Europe by storm. She has appeared on the covers of Vogue and other top magazines working with the world’s top designers, and is the undisputed “Queen of the Runway.” Her unique runway walk and style changed modeling history forever. In 1973, Pat was part of the legendary fashion show at the Palace of Versailles in France that came to be known as the “Battle of Versailles”‎ where top American Designers, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Halston, and Stephen Burrows battled French designers, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Ungaro, and Christian Dior. The show featured some of the top Black models from America. The star-studded room included everyone from Princess Grace of Monaco, The Duchess of Windsor, Paloma Picasso, Rudolph Nureyev and Liza Minnelli, to Andy Warhol. This is where Cleveland shared the stage with Joséphine Baker, who performed during the show. It was at this point that European designers started to embrace African American models as they had embraced Joséphine over 50 years earlier.

While living in Paris, Pat had the opportunity to see Joséphine perform and they forged a great friendship. Pat stated "I was deeply heartbroken when Joséphine passed so suddenly. I was in Paris at the time of her death and went to her funeral. It was a life changing event for me." Before her death, Joséphine Baker stated that Cleveland would be ideal to portray her in film. Pat was also a contender for the 1991 HBO movie The Josephine Baker Story.

Throughout her career, Pat has been closely compared, sought after, and photographed as ”La Baker". ‎Photographers including Pelito Galvez, Bart Van Leeuwen and Alan Kaplan for Italian Vogue and was dubbed "The Joséphine Baker of the Runways" by Andre Leon Talley.‎ Pat's life has closely mirrored Joséphine's. Cleveland was the inspiration and muse for Andy Warhol, many top designers and photographers just as Joséphine Baker had been during her career.
