Overview

Chance of a Start (TIS-CLF002), Patrick Clifford’s second solo album, showcases strong and versatile songwriting— as well as the ability he shares with artists like Christy Moore, to deconstruct a familiar song, find its emotional and lyrical center of gravity, then make it entirely his own. He reimagines six classics by twentieth-century Irish and folk songwriters such as Pete St. John, Ewan MacColl, and Dominic Behan— and revitalizes them for a new generation, before they are forgotten or (worse yet) fall into irrelevance for a lack of thoughtful stewardship.

The production on Chance of a Start is varied, elegant, and haunting, the solid Irish-folk foundation enriched by shades of Country/Bluegrass, Alt-Rock, and Peter Gabriel-style World music.

About the Artist

Patrick Clifford is an Irish-American musician, songwriter, and producer.

He was a founding member of Four to the Bar, one of the preeminent bands of the New York City Irish pub/club circuit from 1991-1996. The quartet toured the U.S. east coast from Massachusetts to Florida, and as far west as Chicago and St. Louis. They opened for Sharon Shannon, served as Pete Seeger’s backing band, and shared billing with Trisha Yearwood and the London Symphony Orchestra at the Daytona International Music Festival.

Clifford performed on, composed for, and co-produced the band’s two releases: a live album, Craic on the Road, and a studio album, Another Son.

In 2010, he released American Wake (TIS-CLF001), his first commercial work as a solo artist.
