Album Notes
Why Warwick & Bacharach?
Scorsese and DeNiro. Hitchcock and Kelly. Herzog and Kinski. The arts are filled with pairings of creators and the vessels that best fulfilled their visions. To this list, we can add Bacharach and Warwick. From 1961 into the ‘70’s, Burt Bacharach with his writing partner Hal David wrote quirky but catchy pop tunes and turned to Dionne Warwick to give them voice. It was a fruitful partnership that created millions of records sold throughout the years.
So why do you seldom hear other artists cover this gold mine of material? Part of the answer lies in the iconic status the recordings achieved: a hard-to-separate collage of catchy melodies, curious and humorous lyrics, arrangements with indelible sonic signatures, and perfect performances, all blended together into an inseparable whole. Who wants to venture a version of one of these songs and risk comparisons with that?
Into the challenge comes vocalist, Paula Johns, motivated by a lifetime love of this material and equipped with experience from a career of emotional and flawless pop, R&B, jazz and classical singing.
Her answer is to remain true to the material, but make the grooves deeper and personalize the voice, finding the meaning at the core of each song.
In her new show, she tackles the career of these musical giants, adding side trips to show other aspects of their creative geniuses, Dionne’s work with Isaac Hayes and Bacharach’s work with Elvis Costello, being two obvious examples.
So, enjoy these classic tunes redressed in new clothes for a new century. You’re going to remember all these songs as Paula sings them to you; you just forgot you knew them, that’s all. Rediscover them and love them anew.
