ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This is the seventh CD in the project by performance artist/teacher/professional cellist Paul Christopher and his producers Helen and Beecher Wood to record the repertoire of cello duets authored by Jacques Offenbach in the late 19th Century. They are spectacular, enchanting, spell-binding, captivating works by this master of melodic composition. The duets are true joys to play and hear. While they were originally written by Offenbach as teaching methods for the cello (our first-through-sixth CDs containing his "Cours Methodique" works, Opus 49 through Opus 54; and this, our seventh CD, plus an eighth if it ever gets done in the future, contain his "Cello School," Opus 19, 20, 21 and 34), the duets provide outstanding pieces for performance and hold their own as delightful entertainment. In Jacques Offenbach's early life, he was a virtuoso on the cello and he later became the "Father of French Operetta," a true and serious composer. His compositions are genuine masterpieces and are set apart by this special gift of his, being a truly great composer. One document of literature describes him as being the most popular musician of his time. The performances on this CD, by Paul Christopher and his once-student, now professional colleague, Milovan Paz, are dazzling, powerful and moving. Paul's grasp of the instrument, his professionalism and true enjoyment of these works really show in the performance and Milovan's fresh, special talent and youthful strength on the instrument really shine throughout. These two clearly enjoy playing the duets and the listener will really enjoy what they have to offer. Many of the pieces have never before been recorded, so the producer (and the performers) are really proud of that--to be bringing these fabulous, obscure works out into the world for the first time to be enjoyed.
