Review:

American Cowboy Magazine

It is impossible to go wrong with a music cycle that begins with the distinctive theme of "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly." Add to that Willie Nelson helping "Pick up the Pieces," and some good original tunes ("One Less Honky Tonk," "Yellow Wine," and "Old Story") and you have a very fine album. Pauline Reese has a powerful voice, she plays a good guitar, and she pulled in some talented musicians to help her with "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" an album co-produced with Tommy Detamore and distributed by her own label. "Let's all dance together before the honky tonks are gone," she sings in "One Less Honky Tonk." Reese really gets you rocking with her rendition of "Pawn Shop Rodeo Buckle" a song written by Julie Sckittone and Mike Blakley, and Sckittone adds to this version by singing backup to Reese. In "Yellow Wine," a song with a Tex-Mex feel, you will want to dance to the melody and lyrics: "She don't call it tequila, she calls it the yellow wine--it's the drink of the people from way down south of the border. So bartender, set 'em up; bartender, please take my order." The instrumentation--particularly the horn playing of Al Gomez--adds to its appeal. Without doubt, my favorite song on this CD is "Pick up the Pieces," which Reese co-wrote. "Pick up the pieces, after love ceases and learn to love again some way," she sings and Willie Nelson chimes in "to pick up the pieces after love ceases robs a soul of its pride." From top to bottom, this is a fine album with some great instrumentation (including Willie's unique gut-string guitar).
