ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Paul Schlesinger and his Knights of Texas Swing

Twin fiddles... twin guitars ... three generations of Texas Swing musicians!
Includes a 24-page book filled with musician bios, anecdotes, and vintage photos!

Thank you for your interest in this CD. In addition to showcasing my talents as a vocalist, musician, and music producer, this project showcases many of the musicians who have either influenced my career or performed with me on a regular basis. We form a multi-generational group whose musical roots grew out of the Central Texas dance halls and span the 1930s to the present.

The “Texapolitan” Sound...
The style of music heard here isn’t exactly pure Western Swing, nor is it Texas Honky-Tonk country. It’s kind of a blending of both, molded by the unique playing styles of the performers who grew out of Central Texas. Famous Texas recording artist and bandleader Hank Thompson called his smooth, rehearsed style of Western Swing “Countrypolitan.” I call mine “Texapolitan.” It’s built around six key elements: 1) the rhythm guitar style of Bill Dowdy; 2) melodic twin fiddle and guitar leads of me and Ray Tesmer, respectively; 3) my own somewhat unique vocal enunciation; 4) the old-school, improvisational take-off rides of Ray Tesmer (guitar), Jimmy Grabowske (steel), and Bill Dessens (steel);
5) the clean and simple country-swing drums of George Harrison; and 6) the 2/4 to 4/4 swing bass of Kim Cochran, played to match Bill Dowdy’s rhythm guitar pattern. I do vary the formula from time to time, modifying it as necessary to fit the song, and selecting the appropriate musician to accommodate the needed sound. The other prominently featured musicians — Bud Harger (steel), Clyde Brewer (piano), and Greg Rickard (piano) — fully complement the Texapolitan groove.

Circle of Influence: The Melody Masters
This CD owes a lot to Jimmy Heap and the Melody Masters, who from 1946 to 1977 were one of Texas’ most popular dance bands. Based in my hometown of Taylor, they achieved national fame with their top 5 Billboard hit recording of "Release Me." A large percentage of the songs are from their repertoire, and nearly all of the musicians featured on this CD share a direct link. Perk Williams, their fiddler and vocalist from 1949 to 1957, taught me to play the fiddle in 1993. The fiddle I play belonged to Arlie Carter, Heap’s pianist and song transcriber from 1946 to 1955. Drummer George Harrison, featured on 12 tracks, was a Melody Master in 1954-57. Rhythm guitarist Bill Dowdy, featured on 11 tracks, played at various times with Perk, George and Arlie, and cut a record with the Melody Masters in 1950. Arlie played the aforementioned fiddle on that same record. Steel guitarist Bill Dessens, featured on five tracks, was Perk’s band mate in 1943 and recorded with Bill Dowdy on 4-Star Records in 1949. Later, Dessens played with George. Pianist Clyde Brewer, featured on four tracks, recorded with Perk in the 1960s on D Records out of Houston. Steel guitarist Jimmy Grabowske, featured on five tracks, gave Melody Master steel guitarist Cecil Harris early lessons on the instrument. In the 1960s Ray Tesmer, featured on 14 tracks, turned down an invitation to go on the road with the Melody Masters. Naturally, Jimmy Heap’s son, Jimmy Heap Jr., who drums on track 13, is a direct link. All of the musicians on this CD have played Melody Master songs throughout their careers, including "This Song is Just for You," which is featured on the CD.

This CD also features the first commercial recording of "Say Y Me Tib," an original tune composed by Melody Master Cecil "Butterball" Harris, and performed live on stage by the Melody Masters in the early 1970s.
