ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Singer Penka Encheva had dreams of becoming a professional folk singer. At age 18 she won the Dobrudzhan regional singing competition that encompassed the best singers in northeast Bulgaria. Soon after, she moved to the city of Plovdiv in central Bulgaria where she attended university, became a teacher, and sang occasionally on radio and television. There she met and married her accordionist husband and continued to sing with him at weddings and informal parties. Ms. Encheva came to the Seattle area in 2010 at age 67 to live with her daughter's family and care for her two grandson. She had stopped singing well before coming to America.

Grandma Penka's singing life was reignited when she joined the 35-member Bulgarian Voices of Seattle Women's Choir. Formed in 2011, all its members were born in Bulgaria. They range in age from 25 to 78.

Penka is joined on the CD by the choir and a number of other artists to create a work of wonderful variety from slow unaccompanied ballads to sprightly dance tunes.

Grandma Penka is featured in a documentary film by Bogdan Darev entitled "This Baba / Tazi Baba." The 30-minute film is Penka's story, but also the universal story of immigrant grandmothers from every country across the globe who are divided between here and there, isolated by a lack of English, stuck in suburbs, missing their friends and loved ones back homes. For information about the film go to www.thisbabamovie.com

Both the CD and film were part of Songs of Our Families, a Bulgarian heritage project sponsored by the Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center of Seattle: www.seattle-bg.org
