ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Penny Corris is a classically trained, composer with a degree in music history, theory and composition from the University of Wisconsin Madison and graduate study at Brandeis University and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. An accomplished piano performer, she studied piano at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. In 1968 she co-published a book on Mozart Piano Cadenzas with Paul and Dr.Eva Badura Skoda. Since 1967, Penny has been teaching piano and music theory.

Penny resumed composing in the 1990's when she wrote “Mi Ha-ish,” a liturgical song for her youngest daughter’s Bat Mitzvah. She entered the song in an International Jewish Song festival in Montreal, where it took first prize in the liturgical category. She later composed a cantata, “Da Lifney” for chamber orchestra and choir for the dedication of a new sanctuary at her synagogue. The Bel Canto Chorus is currently planning on performing “Da Lifney” in 2016. Penny has also composed a trio for piano, violin and cello that was performed as part of a public Chamber Concert Series. Penny’s other compositions include a scherzo for piano and cello written for one of her children’s wedding and a recently composed 23rd Psalm for chamber orchestra, choir and soloist.

Writing jazz has added a new dimension to Penny’s composing. In the summer of 2013, she wrote a piece of music for piano, assuming it would be classical. To her surprise, it came out jazzy! One song led to another, and soon she had enough for a
concert. Her husband Bob, an English major at Harvard and attorney when he is not competing in Masters swimming meets, wrote lyrics for the 13 vocal songs. Penny jokingly refers to Bob as “Ira” and he to her as “George.”

Penny's New American Songbook premiered on June 13, 2015, performed by the Dan Dance jazz trio, guest saxophonist Bob Rebholz, and vocalist Niffer Clarke. The concert was a fundraiser for the construction of the Fisher House Wisconsin, which will provide a "home away from home" for military and veterans' families to be close to a loved one during hospitalization at the VA Hospital in Milwaukee. More than 500 people celebrated the performance with a standing ovation. This CD is the live recording of the concert..

Once you hear the CD, you will believe, as we do, that The Penny Corris New American Songbook will come to be recognized as a new, classic original American songbook in the tradition of Gershwin and Porter.
