Penny Pierce

by Penny Pierce

An angry and hostile world needs beautiful music with transportive power. Penny Pierce’s first, and eponymously titled album, answers that call, transporting you above the fray with forty minutes of luxurious sound. Pierce’s clear, bell-like voice rings with a warm resonance. Her songs are eclectic in style, not easily categorized by genre. You’ll find Folk-Rock, Bossa Nova, Country-Western Waltz and 60‘s style Pop. And yet, the songs possess a cohesiveness that lies in carefully crafted, sophisticated lyrics, set to captivating melodies and lush harmonies.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes

This collection of ten songs plumbs familiar and universal themes; the desire to be loved and the risk in loving, the need to feel connected to something larger than oneself, and our yearning for hope and peace in a chaotic world. Pierce brings a maturity and self-awareness to her writing that reflects her contemplative nature and her love of literature. Her influences include ancient texts, poetry and her own journal writing.

To make the album, Pierce sought out the expertise of two multi-talented musicians, Jon Shain and FJ Ventre. Shain, a veteran singer-songwriter, performer, and acclaimed Blues guitarist in Durham, NC, produced the album. Ventre, also a seasoned performer and ace bassist, recorded and mixed the album in his Good Luck Studio located in Chapel Hill, NC. Both Shain and Ventre lend their instrumental virtuosity to the recordings.

In keeping with the eclectic nature of the album, a variety of superb instrumentalists appear throughout. These include; Bill Newton on harmonica, Josh Starmer on cello, Chris Frank of The Red Clay Ramblers on accordion, and Dan Hall of The Old Ceremony on drums. Pierce also accompanies herself on piano and guitar.
