ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
As a trio ensemble from 1982-88, Peter Griggs, Iris Brooks and Glen Velez performed on a great variety of guitars, flutes and percussion instruments from all over the world. Griggs composed most of the works in the trio's repertoire, and these usually involved varying degrees of structured improvisation. The group appeared in concert extensively on the East Coast of the USA, as well as in Iceland, Belgium and Egypt.

"The Sound Of Rain Drying" was recorded "live" in concert at Logos Foundation in Ghent Belgium in 1983, and includes six compositions by Peter Griggs. The album was recently re-mastered in Pre-Sonus Studio One.

Sound of Rain Drying consists of a 12 beat rhythmic pattern, phased to create 12 variations and was performed on gender panerus (Javanese gamelan instrument) and mbira.

Cold Moon begins with a flute solo which explores extended flute techniques in a free rhythmic context, and concludes with a trio for flute, guitar and fan drum.

Sun Stands Still is scored for flute, guitar, shakers, and tambourine. The first part of the piece explores shifting meters in the guitar part against duple percussion pulses, and concludes with an accelerating trio section.

Phases of the Moon is based on a series of gong patterns, which expand and contract to suggest the waxing and waning of the Moon. Embellishment is provided on a jingle ring tambourine.

Past Lives is a long composition in several movements, featuring extended flute techniques as well as several ethnic wooden flutes and ocarinas, guitar, Eskimo throat singing, mbira and frame drum.

100 Camels in the Courtyard was composed using tabla bols (syllables which denote rhythmic patterns in North India tabla music). These rhythmic patterns expand from a cycle of one beat (a pulse) to a cycle of 16 beats, and each one of the 16 patterns is repeated ad lib with variations. The piece concludes with a series of tihais (rhythmic patterns repeated three times which overlap with the length of the cycle, and resolve on the final downbeat).
