ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
My second release as a leader, New Age Old Ways represents my original pieces in a new configuration: the TNT Quartet. My decision to form the TNT Quartet, simply an acronym for ‘Trombone N’ Tenor’, is heavily influenced by the chord-less explorations of Ornette Coleman and the mid-range timbre of the trombone and tenor saxophone frontline (e.g. Al Grey & Jimmy Forrest) During the summer of 2018, I began working with a trio setting mostly for economic reasons, but began exploring the possibilities of adding another horn player. With the strong foundation of ‘swing’ in mind, I immediately gravitated towards saxophonist JD Allen’s sound, bassist Ian Kenselaar’s beat, and drummer Nic Cacioppo’s energy. The result is a hard swingin’ and exploratory canvas of sound. After many heartfelt performances and rehearsals, I aptly decided to enter the studio with the TNT Quartet.

Perhaps considered adventurous on my part, this album is accompanied with a Japanese-style comic (manga) illustrated by Kelly Lin and an original story by yours truly. The manga’s story is a look into a jazz musician’s life in a futuristic setting featuring the TNT Quartet. The manga and the album are meant to be complementary to each other, so please listen and read simultaneously for the full experience. The manga is available online.

Full liner notes and explanation of the songs are available on my website.
